Nate Newton distorsion sound

Hey Everybody,

I'm in love with the sound of Nate Newton, Converge's metalhead bassist. Unfortunalety I can't afford his terrifics Orange heads, so I'm wondering how could I be close to his sound, but for a couple of bucks only (like, with a preamp or something, 300€ max)... I mean, hot to obtain such an organic tube drive like this :

Does anyone have an idea ?

I get something in that ballpark running a Darkglass AO into a Damnation MBD. Not the same, but it has a supersaturated blowtorch distortion vibe. Something unusual is going on in the high end there though.

Its a Kurt Ballou tone so its definitely multiple mics on the cabinets and a blend of clean amps and distorted amps. There is also some kind of modulation effect. Hard to reproduce that kind of sound with a single pedal.

^ Correct. I hear a clean signal, a distorted signal, and a subtle bit of chorus or flange, probably on the distorted channel.

To get all the elements of this tone, @VincBzlc will need either need two amps, a signal chain that lets him mix two independent effects chains...

...but he can probably get about 80-90% of the way there with a dirt box with wet/dry mix, plus a chorus with wet/dry mix. Dirt box at about 70% wet, chorus at about 30% wet, tweak from there.

Note that the Joyo has no wet/dry mix, and thus won't help to cop that tone.

One could also simulate this same signal chain with a modeling processor like a Zoom B1 Four. I might try it later!

The modulation could also be a phase alignment quirk rather than an actual effect. A Damnation Audio Loop Blender with a rat or similar grindy drive could probably get most of the way. Bright bass too.

Nate runs two amp, two cabs.
Orange Amplifiers AD200B 200W Tube Bass Amp Head for low-end.
Orange Thunderverb 200-Watt Tube Guitar Amp Head for mids and treble.
So basically anything replicating the Orange sound may get you in the vicinity.
Also remember, chasing studio recorded tone can and will drive you insane. There is so much more going on in the signal than just instruments, pedals, and amps.

Providence stampede dt or stampede od..or Lone Wolf Audio The Vigilante into an orange preamp.. Inner phasing frequencies are causing the modulation crap.. A phrase 45.. Turned down will do that
