That's dye, not paint. Dye still allows the wood grain's character to be noticed.
I have nothing against well-applied dye.
I despise the "dipped in a tar vat" look. Flame on!

I also don't like when people say stain when they mean dye.

Natural Ash basses are boring. Especially with a maple fretboard.
It's like eating unsalted soda crackers. Leaves you wishing there was some flavor to it.
I don't get the allure.

I find this thread amusing. Part of me agrees with the O/P, while part of me doesn't. The first time I saw the AV Reissue '75 Jazz in Natural with black blocks and binding, I was lusting uncontrollably! Bought one brand new in 2000. Also had a legitimate '75 P-Bass. Loved both of them, and they were my

go-to's for quite a few years.

But yes, admittedly I did eventually get bored with the aesthetics. Now I don't have either one. But I sure did love them for awhile!!!

Totally agree with the OP. Natural Ash is sooo boring. Like SUPER ULTRA MEGA BORING!! Espacialy that ugly Flame Ash. Look how awful it is.

It's all subjective. But for my taste, I will always prefer the look of natural wood instead of painted.

The plus side is these are the easiest to refinish and add some color when you are ready for such a flamboyant instrument
