Natural Ash basses are boring

For the avoidance of doubt I sould also add that my original and long gone late 70's Wal ProBass (fretless) and '82 dot-and-bound Jazz (fretted) were also natural Ash. Unfortunately I have no pictures of either.

I want a musical instrument, not an unpainted deck, porch, or end table.

This makes absolutely no sense. The ability of an instrument to be used to produce music is what makes it a musical instrument, not the color.

You're basically saying that an unpainted bass does not function.

For Fender J and P Basses my favourite appearence is indeed natural ash with tort pickguard. Especially if it's aged or tinted natural. Here's mine:

Opinions are as wide and varied as there are people to have them.

How boring is it to a blind person?

You don't like them, they bore YOU... and maybe some others.

but someone obviously likes them, I see them in stores all the time.
I wouldn't personally choose one, nor would I choose a flashy one. I like sunburst, which a while back I saw someone else say was boring.

If we all liked the same thing, that would be boring.

Ash basses are going to become scarce due to the diminished availability of timber. So all you owners, watch your ashes. I would grab your ashes and hold on to them, if I were you.

I think so. Fender calls it aged natural which appears a bit more orangey than a usual natural ash body. The first post actually shows the predecessor (Fender elite series), which was just clear coated I think.

Lol. I own three natural ash basses with maple fingerboards. I love them and I will fight anyone who tries to ruin them with a pickguard or other splash of color
