NBA Playoff thread 2012

They've gotta do a better job on Battier. He looks like he's going to be a key player. He's been sinking threes like free throws over the past two games!

Agreed. I think we're seeing now how potent the "big 3" of LBJ, D-Flop, and Bosh really can be not so much in terms of their output, but in how focusing on them opens up the role players. They can't let Battier hit 4 open threes per game.

Still, in the first half the Thunder were simply missing shots like there was a lid on the basket. Missed shots that the Thunder normally would make lead to transition and create extra possessions for the Heat, and it only takes a few of these to turn the tide of a game. In spite of that, they were only one questionable call (James fouled Durant) from overtime last night. Interesting series for sure. My only hope is that the refs continue to let the players decide the games. Durant didn't get the call last night, which is OK as long as there isn't an onslaught of homer flop calls in Miama next week. Just be consistent.

And Jeff Van Gundy: quit complimenting players on drawing fouls by creating contact. No matter who does it, it detracts from the game. If you head fake a player into the air, you should be able to go straight up and shoot. You should NOT be able to lean into the airborne player, throw up a meaningless hail mary that you never expected to go in, and flop. That's not basketball, that's theater. To turn this on the Thunder, the one rule about extending the arms and swinging them under a defender and flailing for a call has been changed in what they are now calling the "Durant rule". GOOD FOR THAT RULE CHANGE. That was a bogus strategy, and Durant's too good a player to need to resort to that. Next, let's get rid of the "fake & flop" play in the same way. It sucks the life and integrity out of the game. The refs should be able to make a call on whether the offensive player was trying harder to draw a foul than make a shot. Yeah, it's a judgement call, but everybody knows what is meant by it. That alone would clean up the game A LOT. And when I say this, I freely admit that Hard-Flop is every bit as bad as D-Flop about this.

4th quarter of a playoff game, that foul NEVER gets called. Heck - 75% of the time it wouldn't get called 2 minutes into the 1st quarter.

I mean - I HATE the Heat... but anyone whining about that non-call is untied from reality.

I think it was a poor non-call, but I'm not whining. If OKC didn't dig themselves a huge hole through most of the game that call/non-call would have been a non issue!

Meh, I saw a couple bad calls both ways. Wade's second foul was on seemingly incidental contact running down the floor. Van Gundy was scratching his head at that one. And Durant got a 50/50 call near the end of the game when he drove to the hoop on Battier. Had it gone the other way, it would've been his sixth foul--I wouldn't say that was a bad call, just another "tie goes to the superstar" call.

Agreed.

That exact same foul, involving two non-name players, under 1 minute left in the 4th quarter of a playoff game..

What percentage of the time do you think it get's called? .1%? .01%?

Now - you want to argue that it's a by the book foul? Sure. You want to argue the non-call isn't the complete and utter norm? Delusion.
Never said it wasn't the norm. But, it's a by the book foul (as you admit), and it very easily could have changed the outcome of the game. That foul, in the first quarter, meh. There are bad calls ALL the time, but this one may have decided the game. That's my only input.

Like I said earlier. Don't fall back 17 points and such fouls don't turn into game-deciders. I blame OKC for slacking and congratulate Miami for controlling almost the entire game.

Heat won the game fair and square. The Thunder played below their level and dug a hole too deep to dig themselves out of. Their defense was a step slow, the Heat were hitting shots, LBJ had another monster game, and the supporting cast was good enough on this night. Now it's a best of 5, dead even with the Heat having the home court. The plot thickens...
Agreed on this. And to expand:

LBJ hit the big shots at the end when the Heat needed them. The bank shot when OKC got within three was huge. And he was perfect from the free throw line both at the end and throughout the game.

Wade: I missed all but the last 8 minutes of Game 1, and he drove to the hoop 3 times in that span (scoring twice and drawing a foul on the third), so I didn't understand the comments that he'd turned passive. In any case, he had a pretty darn aggressive and good Game 2, except for a couple bad turnovers near the end.

Bosh: A monster on the boards last night, his contribution should not be overlooked.

Durant: Heated up at the right time, but LBJ was equal to the challenge. The youth of both KD and Westbrook showed briefly last night when each committed dumb fouls in the backcourt.

Westbrook: Killed OKC last night. Whether it was due to Durant being in foul trouble or Miami's big lead, he reverted to "chucker" mode. Yes, the Thunder missed shots they normally make, but the great teams find ways around that, usually by taking it to the hoop. They didn't do that nearly enough in the first half due to Westbrook. Also, Miami simply played better D this time.

Harden: A flopper for sure, but man, can he light it up!

I was in Oklahoma when it happened and while everyone was glad the state (finally) got a pro team they were also very disappointed that it had to happen the way it did.

I think the Sonic fans are going to be in the same position too. If you haven't heard, there is now someone willing to build an arena in Seattle, so the talk of getting the Sonics back is gaining steam.

Last I heard, Stern said there are no expansion plans for the NBA, so Seattle will have to get someone else's team. At least it won't be like how Clay did it by lying to everyone in Seattle.

If they called every "by the book" foul, the game would be 6 hours long.

That is a foul that is basically NEVER called.

I'd much rather have them not call every possible foul, as there are about half a dozen every time down the court. I want consistency, not strict adherence to the letter of the rules.

Nice comeback by the Heat last night. I didn't see any of the game, only the highlights, but...it appeared OKC's youth showed again, with Durant picking up too many fouls and Westbrook getting out of control.

Credit Miami, though, for relentlessly taking it to the hoop again, controlling the boards again when it mattered most, and turning it up on D in the fourth--when the opposing team turns it over NINE times in the 4th quarter and Durant and Westbrook still combine for only 8 points, that's serious D.

I'm fully aware Miami was in this position a year ago in the Finals. But I like the way they're playing more this time, especially (duh) LeBron.

Shaq is another celebrity who needs to go away. He has some commercial out where he starts off bragging about being big and the caption says something about a man who lives big. Whatever dude....go away already.
