Oddly enough I’m finding this thing one of the best sounding basses I’ve played. I mean for what it cost me it sounds as good as 1000+ dollar basses.

On that note ^^^^^ it will never be for sale, it’s a keeper…

I can see how these necks could split if people tilted them and then cranked the crap out of two lower neck screws to leverage a split. My lord I’m thinking some folks shouldn’t use a Philips head “two turns past shear”

I have a question?

Ok so I got paranoid about using the micro-tilt feature and decided to pull the neck to verify all was in order. All good, small coin/disc in place, small route/bore hole for heel nut is there as well. Now I’ve seen all the above in pics, what I haven’t found in my search is.(I should of snapped pics)

1. Just above(towards nut)coin/disc is a small square patch of black mesh material on the neck itself. It’s not a repair it’s been there as I can easily see this neck was never removed. What is it?

2. there’s 3 digits written in pencil, 614 or 6/4?

I’ve never taken the neck off any of my Peavey MIA basses.

I’ve seen material that looks like emory cloth on other basses where I did take the neck off. I defer to @Eilif

I think you'll have to spend a lot more than a grand to significantly better it's range of tone. Plus it has a classic look to it, that's not Fender so it will fit in a lot of bands, both for tone and appearance.

Yeah, with neck tilt you do have the capability of splitting the neck if you crank the sides down or put too much on the middle.

I don't have the manual in front of me, but IIRC, neck tilt is supposed to be done with the strings loosened. I think the idea is that under tension you get almost all the relief out down to whatever measurement they recommend and then you loosen the strings and the neck screws and adjust the neck tilt as desired.

Don't take my word on it though, the manual will walk you through it pretty simply. You do sometimes see Peavey Bi-Laminate (2 part necks with opposing grains) necks with separations along the center join. Sometimes it does seem to be a result of misuse of the microtilt, but it's not terribly common.

The combination of Micro-tilt and a the very stable Bi-Laminate necks lets you dial in a very precise setup that is often very stable with minimal adjustment. My T-40 is probably the bass that has required the least setup work and I've had it since around 2003.

I've seen Emory and sandpaper too. My assumption with one-sided grit substances is that they're more shims that won't slide around than to prevent shifting, but I could be wrong. I think I once saw a piece of that gritty two-sided sanding mesh in a guitar pocket.

This is why I wanted to open it up and look it over. Manual is just a short paragraph with not a lot of info on how to NOT over tighten wood screws.

It says loosen upper screws first a full turn, prior to that it only wanted the strings detuned of few steps. I think this is so the neck stays bottomed out and seated in the pocket. It’s simple to do, but someone with serious popeye forearms could cause a disaster.

I like the penciled-in numbers, they look fresh. I can only speculate if it’s a month & day or a techs number.
