the maple capped necks were used in '66-'68 but your's has the trasition logo on the headstock. i'd be willing to bet that the neck is really an old stock '66 but the bass was built (and stamped) in '68 for a custom order. congrats!

What a beauty. I have sought and purchased 4 of these rare beauties over the years.
The first one I came across was owned by Mark Evans, the original bass player in AC/DC.
The brightest most aggressive p bass sound I ever heard, think piano all the way up the neck.
I begged him to sell it to me but alas...
I looked for 15 years until tadahhh, ebay... Your neck is identical to the 66C I own with the lollypop tuners, transition decal. I have never seen a C width from 68 so I agree it's probably 66 stock.
I have 71 candy apple red that has been gigged to death and rightly so, still plays and sounds awesome. Also about to sell a very sweet sunburst over Olympic white 68. All caps were custom order hence often seen with custom colors or in my case, sunburst over custom oly white. It was thought they were only available from 66-71 however the Norman's bass seems to challenge that. Also the 30 slab bodied P's sent to England in 66 also had cap necks. Entwhistle, the guy from T-Rex and the Glitter band had these basses. Entwistle's used on several Frankenstein basses he put together. Could there be a more ringing endorsement than that?

Nice! I'll agree that maple caps are probably earlier than 68, from what I've seen or heard...I'd also point out as someone else has, that the C on the neck stamp refers to the width at the nut, rather than a neck shape. People like to talk in neck shapes (V, C, D, etc) but Fender did not designate neck shapes, but width at the nut.

Hi Andy, thank you for all that information.
Mine too has a great piano-like sound all the way up the neck. But rolling off the toneknob gives me also a very nice warm sound.
I love CAR.

Width at nut is approximately 4cm. That is about 1.57 inch I think.
Does that make sense?
