NBD: 1986 Ibanez RB999 "Bean"

Took possession today (at a very nice price) of a 1986 Ibanez "Bean" or "Butter Bean" bass in really good condition. Or at least it is now...when I got it, it had been on a hangar for 20 years. It was unbelievably grubby and with the strings a half inch off the end of the fingerboard. Spent this evening watching the Blue Jays lose (again) to Baltimore while cleaning it up and getting it back in playing trim.

There were a very few minor dings and a bit of corrosion to the tuners and bridge: both made out of some interesting "Accu-Cast" base metal alloy. It cleaned up well and the damage is trivial and superficial. Fingerboard (very, very icky) is in great shape as are the frets—amazing for this 30-year-old beastie. Truss rod (with nice clearance at the base of the neck) works well and neck came back into excellent relief, although I'll track it over the next few days.

From what I've been able to find out, this particular bass was made in Japan in 1986 only, so it's 30 years old this year. The serial number confirms that, starting with A86, meaning January of '86.

It has a remarkably long but narrow shape, nicely carved from basswood, this one with a lovely deep green-grey finish ("Gun Metallic") with a bit of sparkle to it. It's very light but resonant when not plugged in. The pickups (soapbar P and J forms) are Ibanez "low impedance" pickups which appear to incorporate a pickup-based preamp per EMGs. The control cavity confirms this, showing no preamp in there, just a jumble of close-packed cables for the controls (blend first [notched], then volume, then tone) and the jack. Cavity's well-shielded with conductive paint and foil and the bass is effectively silent. The neck is chunky like a P-bass with that tiny headstock. The tuners have smaller, Schaller-sized keys but hefty shafts in enclosed cases. The bridge is really hefty and the individual saddles are an interesting design, the hex set screws pushing up a hinged flap under the saddle so they're always level.

The case is a nice, form-fitting original with excellent support and foam facing in great shape. The case looks really small from the outside—and on first glance it looks like it couldn't be for a bass at all. Then you open it and it's this odd little wonder. The case had the original pickup brochure in it, both hex keys for the truss rod and bridge saddles, and even the original price tag which looks to be $499 or $899 in 1986; can't tell which.

So...how does it sound? In a word, great! The sound reminds me *a lot* of a Guild Pilot bass which I had with EMG PJ pickups. It's very hifi, especially with the tone up. The blend is smooth and full range, from a punch P through a crisp, slightly scooped notched middle position to a slightly honky bridge pickup. The tone has a very wide range, like an EMG circuit. With the blend slightly toward the bridge and the tone rolled back to about 7, this is a very funky little machine. I'm really amazed at the depth and clarity of the sound—especially when wearing such an unusual, small-bodied instrument.

Getting this bass had been in the works for a while and it was only tonight when the previous owner and I managed to be in the same town at the same time. I had planned to have some fun with this and then move it along, but it's such a cute little funkster that I think it may have found a new home!

Hello, i have the same bass, i buy it a few days ago (second hand)3?3, and this have a lot of some problems, the wiring is cut, and the neck pickup is broken, so i Will be thanksfull if you can helpme with the wiring circuit and if you help me with a question: i want to change the broken neck pickup for another ibanez active pickup SRX2EX2, what do you think, it Will work?. The Last question, what the resistence of the pickups, And the volume and the tone pots, thanks, i really need your help, im from el salvador (central América), so, excuseme for my bad english ...

Your English is fine, Ces... it's an old thread, and I'm sure if @jmlee still has this sweet bass, he'll chime in...

... another good resource is Ibanez's site, or contacting them, especially with a serial number for your bass.

Even better, I consider @hypercarrots an excellent Ibanez historian, so maybe he'll chime in, too...

... just tell him, you like the black Ibanez.
 
The srx2ex2 pickup is mostly likely passive (with an active preamp) and the low impedance pickups in your bass are active. They have a chip in them. If you want to use the srx pickup in your bass and if it fits, you’ll need to bring over the wiring from the srx or use pots with a value that will work with the srx active preamp.

Hi @Cesarino! I'm afraid that I no longer have that bass—although perhaps I should have kept it. What I can tell you is this: that bass has (i) active pickups which require a battery power supply, but (ii) no preamp, just passive volume (2) and tone (1) controls. I don't know the pickup you're suggesting as a replacement, but there's nothing magical about the factory-equipped active Ibanez pickups—although this is a very good-sounding bass with those pickups. In principle, you could replace the active Ibanez pickups with a passive soapbar and a jazz bass-type pickup—say Bartolinis—or with other active pickups like those from EMG. EMG is actually a good place to look for a wiring diagram for active pickups with a passive tone control. That is exactly what was in a Guild Pilot bass I had until recently, all EMG components.

Each active pickup has a power supply wire which gets 9 (or even 18) volts from the battery or batteries, and then the output from the pickup is simply the other two wires which can be treated exactly the same way as output wires from any other (passive) pickup. Note that the pots are rather low resistance, here 100k, but they can even be 50k since the active pickups have a low DC resistance. [N.B. Volume and tone pots are usually about 25x the DC resistance of the pickup: 250k for a 10k single coil for 500k for a dual coil humbucker, although you can go higher to get more high frequency information passing through.]

OK, if i understand, my bass pickups are low impedance, ok, its ok, and it has a preamp chip inside it, ok, at this point i understd easy, but if the SRX2EX2 is a passive pick UP with an active preamp, this preamp is external????, so, what pickup can i use to substitute my original low impedance neck pickup????, there are low impedance active pickups to buy in this times ????

This wiring diagram is perfect, thankyou so much, i Will use it when i start the circuit reconstruction. Other thing i noticed is that the bass has 3 pots, but one of them has 6 eléctric terminals, i search info, and it is a blend control pot, to control the pan Mode, now my question is, the original wiring is with, 2 vol and a tone pot, or is 1 vol, 1 tone and a blend pot, its too confuse!!!!

An emg pickup may be able to replace your broken neck pickup. Are you sure it’s broken? Maybe there is a loose wire from the pickup? Maybe the blend pot is broken?

This would be the cleanest and most foolproof solution I think
OK, at this point i believe that it is a good idea, to change the active for passive, but taking the bass scale in mind, do you think it could work and give a good sound with passive pickups?, i want to record a little project, and i need to detune the bass to C# in the 4th string, F#(3th), B(2nd) and E(1st string)....

That bass is a full 34” scale on a small body, so you could detune with slightly heavier gauge strings. If it were me, I’d go with active EMGs to keep the character of the bass. EMG can supply the vol/blend/tone harness you’d need.

Yes you're right, the bass actitude and character is important, and chance to passive is a good idea, but i can do it better to search for an appropiate active pickup for it. Really all your comments help me to think the Best way in this rebuilding project....
