Shield it up and probably replace that pot. It sounds better in a mix than it does solo, IMO.

The volume mod helps the tone control at different levels of volume it's more for tone though you get more output too. It's a confusing name in that regard.

Check to make sure the capacitor on the tone pot is connected. Those Patriots are really good. There is an old guy in our area that has played one as his only bass since it was new and he gigs regularly at least a couple times a week.

If you want the tone control to cut more treble, you can change the capacitor value for less than a dollar.
See what is in there now (maybe .022mfd) and replace it with a higher value cap.
I believe the old standby value in a vintage P Bass is .047mfd.

ok, took it by guitar center

they fixed it no charge (except for the new set of chromes I stuck on it)

the tone cap was blasted

it was a .22 (decimals might be wrong)

and great tech guy changed it to .1 (again, the number might be off--he said this cap was more the standard these days on like a precision----it was a much much bigger cap in physical size

anyhow

I didn't find a single deadspot anywhere

I noticed how much thicker the headstock is on the patriot vs my fenders

could this be why? not wanting to start a flame war

just wondering

I believe a Fender Precision comes with a .047 "orange drop" polyester film capacitor.
The .047 will cut off more high end and might also make your sound darker when the tone knob is fully counter clock-wise as well, depending on how the bass is wired.

It's just because Peavey was making great necks at that time!
Yours is a two piece full maple neck, which I think tends to make a very nice consistent stable long lasting neck.

Yes, for sure more treble cut than an .047 and way more than an .022

but this thing is light---comparing to my fenders---it is much slimmer in the body

thicker in the neck---but I haven't experienced neck dive

Congrats! Those are cool basses, and for years I had one exactly like yours. They sound great, and record extremely well. I sold it because I preferred slimmer necks, but I wasn't doing my own setups then, and in retrospect I think I could have made it work for me. Those Super Ferrite pickups are excellent.

I find mine is nicely balanced, but but feels light, and mahogany is premium wood IMO.
The neck is so stable on mine, set it and forget it.

intonation and saddle height are way off


once I get that down---it should be cake
