nbd 1987 peavey patriot--suggestions needed?

just got this from gc

price was nice


my first usa made bass besides my custom carrigan that is now for sale

talked the old lady into it

was very worried about the neck etc

once it got here, the neck is fabulous, I will need to setup some, but not much, I think it is

the super ferrite pickup isn't anywhere near as loud as I have been told--but it sounds awesome!

the tone knob doesn't seem to do much of anything (suggestions here tb brothas)

first night using it

seems like it just doesn't work at very much at all

I "think" I can tell a difference

but it isn't like my p tone knob where I can turn it off

it also feels real real loose

I have two Patriots, one is mahogany like yours. These are great basses. My Patriots have good output but they certainly are not the loudest passive pickup basses I own. Is your other bass active, just curious what you are comparing the Patriot to. I would take a look under the hood see whats going on with the tone control. Maybe get a little refunded from GC.

Yeah there should be a pretty huge difference from all the way down to all the way up on the tone knob. Sounds like something came loose.... or a weird mod of some sort.

I have Patriots in red, white, and black, but no mahogany. They're great. If you don't find any issues with the wiring and pots, try raising your pickup a little to get more volume out of it.

Also, did you steal my cat, let him check out the new bass, then return him before I found he was missing?

I agree, the neck on the Patriot is very nice.
And the Grover Titan tuners are top quality.
My mahogany Patriot tone knob has a tone range that is definitely less than a P-Bass.
To me it is more usable because the tone knob all the way down on a Precision sounds like unusable muffled deadness, where the tone knob on the Patriot seems to be more practical.
Love the tone of the Patriot SF pup, a nice alternative/additional sound to the classic P pickup.

With flats on mine I can barely tell the tone control does anything. The output on mine is definitely less than my other basses, but adequate. And I don't think they have much low end, but it's perfect for flats since the clarity is definitely there. Don't worry about it, just enjoy it for what it is.

I would check the hight of the pickup, and, considering the "low output" situation, raise it some just on general principals and see if that doesn't improve it some. I would also open it up to make sure there isn't a wire loose causing the tone knob issue. You could also change it out if it's suspect, for about $5-15.

Considering it's a 30 year old bass, it may be time for some new pots cap. Or start by cleaning them and inspect the solder joints. Cool bass BTW.

Try changing pots and or adding a volume/tone mod. The mod should clear up any issues but new pots should help too.

If the knobs aren’t scratchy when you turn them, try tapping them with your index finger (forcefully, but easy does it)
If the volume or tone jumps, you may have a cruddy pot or failing solder point. If the knobs are smooth and the setting knob setting remains solid, then that’s your bass. You could get different knob results from outright switching them, but probly would leave it to someone else to recommend.

Raise it if you can!

Change the sucker! It doesn 't have collector value!
Before buying stuff, open the bass and show us the guts!

So what? They are dirt cheap!
