My new beater bass project platform! 2012 Made in China Jazz V. Gave it a good cleaning and after a lengthy set up (neck relief was waaaay out) it plays and sounds great!! Less than $200 locally.

Those Affinities will take a super low set up if you shim the neck. This is a great platform for modding.

Thanks for the suggestion, Rezdog!Greetings from North,
I have a Squier VM (Vintage Modified) 5 that I installed a set of Lindy Fralin jazz pickups. It was a straight drop in. I also removed the electronics and replaced it with a John East J-Tone pre-amp that can be run Passive or Active and either way sound outstanding. The pickups alone would probably sound great as an upgrade in the Affinity.

Thanks for the suggestion, skyline!Great find! I love a good project bass.
I think pretty much all Fender/Squier V pickups are L/S size (~3.97" neck, ~4.10" bridge), and there are GOBS of options out there. I personally recommend Nordstrand pickups, but I also have previous experience with Seymour Duncan Apollo Jazz pickups and they were great. No noise, good sound, easy install.
Thanks for the suggestion, skyline!
As a person who loves a good value, and resists doing things that negate that value, I wouldn't just assume that replacing the pickups is necessary. Often it's more of a sideways move, or maybe if ya did an "A/B" comparison you might find a slight difference, but that's not a real-life experience. Imo, if it does it's job, sounds good, I'd reconsider expensive mods that don't even address reliability.it plays and sounds great!!

With that thought, congrats on a nice bass and a sweet deal.![]()

Dr. Cheese, you are, in fact, THE MAN! I put a neck shim in it today because I just wasn't quite happy with the set up. It cured all my ills..lol
