I’ve always played rounds on everything. Lately, I’ve been going back and forth between D’addario Pro Steels, Nickels, and NYXLs. I’ve circled back to Pro Steels and I put a set on this new Special right away. Really like the feel and tone of the Pro Steels. I would have stayed with the EB Slinkies that came on it. They weren’t bad, but they were a little light for my touch.
So Pro Steels 50, 70, 85, 105, and 135 are my go-to strings, which I also use on my Mike Lulls.

My only bass for about 10 years was a Stingray 5H (that was before I came to TB and got all GASsy). Nothing sounds quite like it. I miss having that tone in my lineup. This one is beautiful! Great color. Congrats!

No NDB for me, not yet anyway. I usually wait a while and mine's used anyway and pales in comparison to this one. I probably have a very bright set of strings there right now. Dunlop Super Brights which the seller included in the case. They weren't kidding. I do have a pack of DR Pure Blues which I feel should work for the SR5 Special.
I was not enamored by the strings it came with - sound and feel was off and yep, my least favorite string D'Addario Chromes. I usually keep bass strings but chromes, I just cut them like they were rusted guitar strings.
You should try GHS super steels. Buy directly from GHS and curate a set by buying singles and if you order over 50 shipping is free and comes from Mr. Moody himself.

To me, the Stingray Five with the single pickup is simply the best all-around five, and the genius of it is that guys who didn't think they'd like a five take to them like a duck to water. Built like a tank, tone that can, on demand, cut through most anything, and comfortable for most people. To me, the F150 Ford pickup of the five-string world, that well-received and that easy to use.

Of all the 5 strings I've played, the Stingray 5 neck is/was my favorite. The dimensions, profile, and spacing were perfect for me. Unfortunately for me, I couldn't get my ears to work with the tone but dang that neck. I sometimes still think about giving one another try, maybe I'll get along with the tone with my current 'earspace'.

I think some people give up on the tone of a stingray too quickly at times. There are lots of ways to make it sound different. Besides the aforementioned strings, there are lots of EQ tricks to make a Ray sound different.
I always like to listen to Gail Ann Dorsey anytime I need an attitude adjustment on stingray tone. It’s really is up there with the P in my book.
Not the best, but one of the best. Unique enough to be a standard. I also a agree the five string specs are my favorite on the 10+ fives I’ve owned. It’s just comfy. I’m surprised that part isn’t copied more often.

Hmm, lemme get home and make a measurement of that. I should probably write it down somewhere so I can recreate it if need be….
I can play all types of bass string spacing (from 20mm to guitar spacing. 10.5 ) but what would really be nice is an 18 - 19mm. on the Stingray. That is probably not going to happen.
