NBD... but bummed!

My wonderful wife made it happen and I received a Butterscotch Blonde SBMM Ray 24 for Christmas. Only to find that when I was removing it from the box, the tuning key for the D string was bent to hell. Oh man! Talk about a rollercoaster ride of emotions! I have since packed it back in the box and I'll be heading to Guitar Center tomorrow some point. They will probably have to order another one since I haven't seen any of these in stock at the particular store I frequent. Now I'm thing maybe Toluca Lake Blue. We'll see.

Good luck with the exchange! These were on sale recently so color swap may not be an option. Maybe they will just swap out the tuner for you.

I look at things like that as some things were not meant to be you’ll probably end up with something better or it happen for a reason

If you think you “love it” and IT’S a keeper, you could just buy a new tuner, and call it a day?

Yes, if the nut and string alignment and frets are good and the bass is well balanced just replace the tuner.

That’s the Torque Tuner. You’re gonna love it.
But you can get a replacement machine if you want.

Asking for a new tuner is a good idea but maybe play the bass first to make sure the impact that damaged the tuner didn't cause other problems like wiring etc. Good luck.

Maybe I'm just seeing things, but it looks like more than one tuning key is out of wack. Most definitely shipping damage. That sucks dude! But I hope you get it worked out quickly!

Now that's what I call dropped D tuning. Sorry this happened to you. If there is this much obvious damage, I'd be wary of keeping that specimen. Return it for another. Don't let it ruin your holiday, think of it as another NBD coming soon. Hope this helps.

Don’t return the bass. Just ask for a replacement tuner. That’s an easy fix

It looks like it got hit pretty hard to do that. Definitely check for the neck still being straight and no hairline cracks. It looks great in the pics, but that had to be at least several hundred pounds of force to bend the peg that far.
I’d ask them to replace the tuner and have a luthier there check it over and do a total setup if they can’t do a swap for the same color.

Good call. If nothing else is damaged, maybe bargain for a BT1 as a replacement tuner. Then move your existing E machine to the D string, and put the new de-tuner on the E string.

Too bad you have to deal with this on a new bass though!
