understand....:)

I have a skyline scheff....that kills....just used it in church today as a matter of fact.

It was a FINE bass, as Eric Burdon sang "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"!

And it was well-built and toneful, also I paid a stupid good price on it too- MANY players offered more to buy if from me; as there aren't all that many in the field, I believe.

I guess it had the mis-fortune to be compared against a US Lakland and almost all basses wilt at that!:roflmao:

Part of the reason they cost more is labor, US labor is expensive. Maybe they are better built, maybe not. Those Sadowsky Metros are just as well built as the USA versions, even according to Roger Sadowsky.

True that. I am a MAJOR fan of Japanese basses-Don't anybody get mad at me now: BUT I do think the Sadowsky's are getting a bit outta control price-wise- I see that they are over $1K higher than when I bought my NYC not all that long ago.
And the Metros, while less than a NYC, are by no means a budget buy!

Quite a lively debate here - and more or less civil. Cool.
For me, beyond this one shipping situation - I had hoped that Dan would come out with an interesting US made bass, like his original Laklands. Not that I'm in the market (and I never buy new) but it would have been nice. So it goes.

I'd be very interested to know, too. And yes, you can buy US Fenders, EBMMs, G&Ls, Carvins, assemble a Warmoth to your own specs, etc., etc. all day long, with very nice cases for similar money. Heck, recently you could buy a USA Fender nitro satin Precision with a gig bag for $800! That hits a nerve with me, and obviously a lot of others.

I realize that not everyone needs/wants/can afford an instrument costing in excess of $1000, which seems to be the usual price floor of USA made basses. Companies compete at price points, and if a J bass has to be made of agathis and "crafted in Indonesia" in order to sell it at $299, or assembled in Mexico to sell it at $699, then so be it. But when the tag says $1300, the headstock says Made in Korea, the kid at GC says "Do you wanna buy a case or bag to put it in?" - and it's hanging next to a Fender, same price, same or better quality, made by American workers, comes in a heavy-duty case. . . ??? To me that's a business model that says one of two things: They think I'm a sucker and they're about to rip me off; or they have put together a wasteful and extremely inefficient supply/assembly/shipping chain in which a bunch of middle men between here and Korea (and back again) are driving up the price. Or both. Probably both.

I listened to the previews and yep, they sound like a P and a J. I have an '08 American Standard Jazz that sounds just as good as the JO Signature. $1050 new, with case. I have a '12 American Standard Precision that sounds a lot like the BG Signature. $1200 new, with case. The headstocks aren't matching (and I do like matching headstocks), but they are top quality, sound and play beautifully, and the serial numbers start with "US." Thanks Lakland and Mr. Lakin, but I'll pass.

+ 1000!

soon.......he is building up some cash first.....

You do not care about value?
I like to know where my money is going.
I have no problem paying for a expensive bass when I feel I am getting what I am paying for.
I want to know what makes his basses worth the money.
There are a lot of fine basses made in Asia and they sell for half the price.
What is the resale going to be on these? Around here Skylines sell used for what a MIM Fender does if you want to sell it.
I have played a lot of Skylines and never thought they were worth the price. Nice basses but not worth the price.

I have never seen in the used market a DJ, 4402 or JO selling for the same price as a standard MIM, Lakland Skylines usually sell for the same price as a MIA standard Fender.

Buy a new American Standard or new Skyline and you will bite almost the same junk when trying to sell it.

I can tell you that a 2005 Lakland sells quickly and for a better price than a 2005 MIA Fender

I've used Lakland Skylines (I've had 3) and loved them. I admit that my US-made Laklands are a bit better, but at the end of the day they all 'pay for themselves' several times over, over the course of a year a gigging/sessions. So in that sense, they're an incredible value.

A quick ebay search says otherwise. I can find 5 that sold in the $500-600 range and one for $621 on the first page. Some sellers did alright, but certainly not all of them.

While you can find Fenders in that range, they do appear to sell for a higher price. I don't think anybody is surprised to see people paying a premium for Western made goods in the West. It is still well above what Fender Standards go for.

And MIM basses seem to be selling from $250 to $350 doing the same search, which is below the xx-01 series, the cheapest import Lakland which are selling in the $400's to $500's. The xx-02's do sell close to, or at, what an MIA standard sells for. I don't see Fenders selling for a premium at all...

what models?

look here in the classifieds.....$700 to $1200 for used skylines...

I am not a Lakland guy, I did not search specific models and couldn't tell you what I saw. If you would like to confirm for yourself just go to ebay.com and search Lakland Skyline under sold listings.

I am just going under the impression each one was approximately a $1200 bass, similar to an American Standard. Finding American Fenders in the $5-600 range usually means the bass is from the 80-90s (too old for modern and too new for vintage) or beat all to hell. All of the Laklands I saw appeared to be in good shape, some had some surface scratches but nothing serious. One was a demo if I remember right, but I think everything on the show room floor was a demo model.

@Fuzzy, sorry I should have been more clear when I said it was more than Fender Standards, that means MIM.
