I received my Dan Lakin JO today and thought I'd share it. Mostly good, though I have some concerns as well.

My bass is actually 001, in Fiesta Red. So it was a little surprising when I opened the shipping box and found...

But I opened it up and was relieved to find it was indeed my bass. Did anyone here get number 009 in CAR? Or whoever may get my box, I'd love to trade and keep everything together if possible.

The next part was kind of a bummer. It was shipped without any protective plastic bag or anything at all. So there are quite a number of wear spots that likely resulted from rubbing up against the cardboard box. Primarily on the back and also on the bottom. I tried to take a few pics but they are hard to capture. Pretty obvious in person though.

I like the way the color turned out though my photos make it look different in every shot! I'd say it's more of a faded Fiesta in person.

The knobs are on full. I'd prefer them pointing differently so I will re-orient those.

The case (box?) candy is pretty cool! Shirt, COA (signed by Joe as well), warranty and adjustment tool.

How awesome is this tool? Everything you need in one device. I like that it has the logo too.

The string spacing on the E and G don't line up between the polepieces. I think this should be adjustable and I will spend some time on it but I'm not sure it's going to line up quite right or without some weird spacing.

As for playing it...

First, tuning with reverse tuners is annoying. There, I said it. They work fine, they are good Hipshot tuners. Just an adjustment for me since I don't have any others like that.

The neck feels great. Not thin, not thick. The finish is very smooth. Very comfortable to play.

The low end is very nice. The top end seems kind of constrained. I don't know if that's a manifestation of the string spacing or just how it is. It's there but it's not overly bright. Slapping sounds good but benefits from compression.

Overall, it's a very comfortable bass to play. It weighed in at 8.6 pounds. The neck pocket is great, all the "fit" is very good from what I've seen so far though I sadly can't say that about the finish as it arrived. The neck feels good, the bottom end sounds good. If you're a high end guy you will probably want some EQ. To my ears it actually sounded "vintage". Deep and rich more than bright and snappy.

I wrote to Dan regarding the shipping box. I think that's an easy fix going forward. He had previously said he doesn't have cases or gig bags yet but he is working on a bag in the future. I think it really needs something to protect the finish in shipping.

That's about it for now. I hope others will chime in when they get theirs!

Looks like the bridge saddles are adjustable (the set screw towards the back of the saddle). The G-string appears to be offset a bit towards the center of the bass - you can move it out and that will give better pickup alignment though doubt you'd notice a sonic difference.

Shipping in a box with no other packaging is a huge fail imho. Skip the certificate of authenticity and branded tool and at least buy some foam wrap.

I would personally expect more/different for that price, but it's not a bad looking bass (even though it's red :) ) and most of the issues look fixable. The saddles are adjustable, PU height adjustment would likely brighten the tone, and the finish spots would likely buff out.

Good report. It's a classic looking J-Bass, that's for sure & I am partial to Fiesta Red!
My knee-jerk reactions:
Shipping was totally not good; I can't believe someone would ship a bass- let alone #001-without ANY covering whatsoever.
I had to LOL about your reaction to vintage reverse tuners; I have a couple basses with them, no biggie, but it is disorienting.

Finally- & I really do NOT want to stir up a cross-thread firestorm or anything- But...This is kind of the difference between a "praised expensive" bass.
$1300 gets into EBMM/G&L/Ibanez Prestige territory, that's not inexpensive by any means, say compared to a $300 bass.

Conversely, it's 1/2 the cost of a "beginning" expensive bass, and there do seem to be some issues and facts of build and assembly, etc. that at least to me, justify shelling out more money for something like a Sadowsky, Lull, etc.

I approach my bass buys as a lifetime; I don't flip 'em, and except for selling some great basses when I moved, mine are keepers.

I imagine the bass will sound very good when set-up to your liking, etc. Congrats on being # 001/

Good to hear/see you got the bass.

I do wonder, whether Dan would've received the bass exactly in that condition from Korea.
I'd expect at least some foam around the bass in the box to protect the finish..
The cosmetics would disappoint me a lot for a new bass.

Other than that, I think the fiesta red came out looking good and it's cool you got #1.
Weird that you got someone elses box.. I don't understand that!

Also, it's hard to tell but is that metallic fiesta red? The photos make it look like there's some glitter in the finish but I'm not sure if that's just the lighting or the actual finish.

For this price you can get a US Made G&L. Are these better than US made G&L's?

Dunno, never tried one. I'm not really interested in a "for this price you could have..." comparison.

I emailed Dan and heard back from him, hopefully able to speak on the phone tomorrow. The bottom line is that if I'm not happy I can return the bass. The finish wear is clearly not acceptable and that's a pretty easy fix for him to make going forward.

What to do about mine? Not sure yet.

My pics really don't show the color very well but it is definitely not a metallic finish. Probably just light reflection.

Alder/rosewood is not supposed to sound bright. It's supposed to sound vintage.

There have been plenty of thoughts on this sort of thing. I'm just reporting what my ears tell me. YMMV
