man, regardless of my *loud* comments in the other thread about these...I gotta say, I really feel for ya in this. A big part of me wanted to be proven wrong about these basses. I know I for one would be incredibly deflated by this, and even tho I have no dog in this hunt, I am pretty pissed for you from this. I'm sorry, for the price you're paying, you should not be getting weak sauce excuses like "oh, well I don't have bags or cases yet". YET? What's the hangup, because they're not monogrammed? Like there's some market-wide shortage of cases being made to accommodate them rare model J basses or something? And the box mixup? That *almost* implies that they were at least taken out OF said boxes for at least a cursory inspection and setup, but Ivnow am inclined to think it's more a matter of "get the first batch to the photo shoot" then clear off the set quickly shove them back in boxes affair... the level of care NOT shown to you or this instrument by the manner in which this was shipped to you does not speak well for this "company" at all. It's not a company, it's a branded reselling of a typical off-shore bass with a buncha high dollar spec appointments thrown on and a buncha swag case candy.

IMO.

Sorry to be sucha jerk about this, but I'd find what you received a kick in the face for the money you paid.
I understand if I'm added to a bunch of ignore lists now, but come on. 50 cents worth of betsy wrap would have saved your finish and a lot of hassle, and made you feel better about having opened that box.

It's upsetting to see the lack of attention with shipping details. It's not like he hasn't been through this before. If it were me I'd weigh the value of having #1 vs perfection. If surface repairs can be made using Zymol or scratch remover I'd call it a day. To ship it back you'll need a good case vs gig bag. The alignment is something you ought to be able to handle so it really comes down to the scratches. Check your motives and sleep on it. I think it's beautiful as is.

Use this bass on a few gigs or sessions and then get back to us. That's really the best way to tell how good an instrument really is. And besides, it's gonna get a few dings in it anyway. Heck, my US 494 Deluxe is practically a relic. The back is actually checking a little.

Looks nice! I agree that the lack of packaging is a problem and it shouldn't have arrived with wear, but for me that wouldn't make it worth returning - but it's of course up to you whether that matters to you. It's going to get some wear on it over time no matter how you treat it. String alignment over the polepieces shouldn't be a problem, my jazz is the same but it sounds fine, the magnetic field should be plenty big enough. I'll be interested to hear what you think about it after some play-time!

I gotta say, it's not like Mr. Lakin couldn't anticipate a major review here on TB. I'm frankly amazed that that bass shipped out as is, considering how first impressions go a long way on the internet. I know OP isn't interested in what else $1300 could have bought, but now I know what it does as far as this run of Lakins go. Meh.

Would you accept a new car with door dings because it's going to happen eventually anyway? Nope. I'd be shipping that bass back in a heartbeat.

Just sharing my personal thoughts on the matter. I'm not someone who would buy a new car in the first place, so I may have a different perspective than some. For me, a few wear marks wouldn't deter me if it was a great-sounding and great-playing instrument. Plus, having #001 is kind of cool.

What exactly are you getting for your equivalent dollars with this Korean-made Lakin? A more "boutique-ish" decal on the headstock?

I don't really see how this bass is any less 'special' than a Lakland Skyline, which tend to be very well regarded around here.

Dan has bags and cases, he's just charging for them.

News to me. I'll ask about that.

Like I said before, I'm not interested in the "what else you can get" comparison. I have other basses. I got on board with this because I am also a Lakland fan and wanted to see what Dan would come up with. There's a problem which I'm going to discuss with him and take it from there. I have every expectation he will make it right.

So let's see what happens.

Thanks for posting the photos. I just went to the website, which frankly looks like they put up a page and then forgot to finish it. Sparse.
I think I would be more understanding of these things if it was a brand new start up, but it's really not - this build up has been over a year in the making.
Not the most auspicious debut. I'm certainly interested in how this gets resolved.

From the pictures( the only ones I have seen of these thus far, I feel that it looks just a little bit sloppy in the way it's put together.
I'd forgive that however if the instrument feels great and sounds great and isn't expensive!
I hope that way this was packaged was just a one off. Otherwise ...lack of respect for their own product and customer perhaps?

I wrote him an email before I settled on something else and when I asked about if the basses came with a case or bag he said "No - Case and bag options are currently being worked out. All will be an extra charge. I have an SKB proline case that will probably be $125. I have a USA made case that will be $225"
