Although I was, and primarily still am, definitely a rocker, having come of musical age in the mid-70s there was no way to avoid the blossoming slap craze and at least begin making largely ineffective attempts at learning to play that way. It never really stuck and in the spirit of honesty other than a few clichéd octave thumps and pops when an attractive dancer yells “slappa da bass!” I rarely do it, although I do appreciate the skills of many who do. The classic Louis Johnson “Star Licks” video from the early 80’s had no real effect on me other than making me seriously covet the natural Stingray that he was knocking the snot out of, but I never owned one of these until a couple of weeks ago. Loud and fat and simple and heavy like a proper Stingray with the added enhancement of cat-rattling B string, this bass has some serious ginger. I have the first public gig with it later tonight, funk may be imminent.
