NBD - Fender Am. Standard Precision Bass

I had the exact same colour combo for about three and a half weeks last August - September. I ended up returning it to the store as I had a great deal come my way on an AVRI '57. I tried the black pickguard, as my previous (stolen) P was a black with maple, and I loved the black pickguard on it - I didn't really like it all that much on the CFM, couldn't really put my finger on why - I did however like the white pearloid that ended up going on it - but honestly, the w-b-w looks great on that colour/fretboard combo, and I normally don't like white pickguards on anything.

If it was rosewood I'd have to say tort... to the poster who mentioned getting a blizzard pearl/rosewood - tort is a must for that IMHO...

I love American Fenders, but I don't get Fender's fascination with white pickguards... Was really pleased to see them use Tort again in '08, but they should have used black instead of white, again IMHO.

Rosewood-tort, Maple-black. That's the rule. :bassist: :D

Except for CFM. :D

I have an '08 Am. Std. Jazz in the same color combo as yours. I had a tort guard on mine for awhile, but went back to the original white (or parchment). I actually think the white compliments the Blizzard Pearl better.

Sounds like the exact same one I just bought. I'm picking her up next week.

The rosewood fretboard is beautiful on mine. A lot of variation in color in the rosewood.....you know....I think you guys refer to them as "Skunk Stripes"? or something like that.

She needs a full setup, but she played impressive enough as she was, to win me over.

I am crazy about my '08 A.S. P. It just feels so good in the hands - even non players can feel the difference. After several sets of strings the LaBella 760 flats ended up there and there they will stay. The tone is incredible. I even changed to Fralin Pickups and changed 'em back - the stock one is so good.

Just be aware that you may end up jumping through hoops to use the 'easy' payment plan. It took me about 6 calls and emails to AMS to finally get my order shipped 5 days after I made it (to be fair though, Monday *was* a holiday). I'd advise calling in the order during their 8-5 business hours if you're going to do the 12 pay.. You'll need to talk to someone in the Credit department at least once to give them your SSN for the credit check so they'll actually let you use the 12 months.

One thing I need to do is to find out if AMS will let you 'over pay', like Zzounds does, so I can get this thing paid off early if I want.

I think I'm going to swing by the Music Store here in Tulsa this weekend to see if they have any of the BWB Fender pgs in stock and get some Schaller strap locks (which is what I have on my main strap now) for it.. If not, there's always GC.

I will say, I've been having some fun with the 'Customizable Bass' file a fellow TB'r had put up for Adobe Illustrator. I'm smacking myself now, because I can't remember the TB'r's name, and I'm feeling ashamed since it's been such an awesome tool to check out body & pg colors on P Basses. (And if you don't have Illustrator, you can download Inkscape for free and it will handle the file.)

This weekend I hope to grab some calipers and put up a thickness comparison between my FAS and my MIM P's necks, as well as get it on a scale to find out how much it really weighs... I will say, that neck is one solid mamajama...

Man, I have to agree....... the radius/fret size interaction is huge..... at least to how I play.

I find the smaller the radius, the smaller the frets have to be. Huge frets on a 7.25 radius is a feel killer for me. Tiny/vintage on a flatter radius is just as much a killer.

That one I think is the one that best shows its color off. Didn't get to hit the store today to get the BWB pg, that'll probably end up waiting until next weekend.

As for the radius... Honestly the radius difference itself doesn't bother me. The neck width & thickness are what I'm still adjusting to. I do have a 9.5" radius on the Squier VM Jazz, and I think it suits it just fine. But I am getting used to the neck, and so far there isn't anything about this bass that I'm not loving. (well, except the pricetag, but I'll get over it.)

Well, I was out and about last night so I swung by GC for giggles. The strange thing wasn't that they didn't have any black Fender pg's in stock for the PBass, it was that they couldn't even order it in black from Fender.

They did have an AllParts pg, so I figured I'd give that a whirl. It doesn't have the truss rod notch, but such is life. When I got home I slapped it on the bass. All the holes lined up (which suprised me for some reason). The result had a definite impact... I think the bass looks a bit more aggressive now.

I too went by GC yesterday - but they had one last Am Std Jazz PG left - snagged it.

Oh - this post inspired me - ordered an Am Std Jazz (Charcoal Frost Metallic) from Am. Music Supply - 12 monthly payments...
OUT FOR DELIVERY today.

I'll be placing that black PG on fairly ASAP.
My first 'real' bass - so excited. :hyper:

Nice action! Did you go with RW or Maple FB? There's a CFM Jazz with Maple at a local store here that looks & plays sweet but I wanted to get my P first.

Ok I stand corrected, the black looks way better than the white.
