@MrRobert how did the neck profiles on the 58 and 63 compare?
The measurements are nearly the same
Bass: Nut Width: 1st Thickness: 12th Thickness:
AVRI 58 P 1.735" .820" .1000"
AVRI 63 P 1.74" .820" .1000"
but the descriptions differ on fenders site

One piece maple neck on the 58.
The road worn and classic 50s p basses also have one piece maple necks.
Nice, I got a MIM Classic 50's neck on my FrankenP. I've been noticing lately how the one piece neck allows the note to build. More organic sounding, I guess. It's subtle but pretty cool.
I've been looking at an AVRI 57, but I wanted 3TSB. I guess the 58 is worth a closer look.
I've seen the '58 neck referred to as both a 'large C' and a 'D' neck by Fender and I would say both could apply. It's definitely thicker front to back than the '63, but it's not a baseball bat by any means. I definitely noticed the difference, but it's kind of subtle. That said, everybody feels things differently and it might be a huge difference to you. One interesting thing I've noticed about these new AV series basses is that their weights are all over the place. My '58 weighed in at under 8 lbs, but I've played a few that were closer to 9. Same with the '63s... I've played super light ones and ones that felt like 9+ lbs.
My AVRI '63 is a little over 8 lbs but it's the balance that is the most amazing thing about the bass with regards to ergonomics and playability.
So I've put DR sunbeams on both the AV 63 and the RW so that I can compare.
Btwn these two basses compare to each other I think the AV 63 is darker with more lows and the Road worn is brighter with more mids.
I say these two b/c I have no idea how other specimens of the same make would sound in my hands.
Is it the rosewood fingerboard and thicker neck vs the one piece maple neck and supposedly kiln dried body wood? I dunno
I'm actually happy they don't sound the same b/c it gives me an excuse to keep more than one P
@armybass how do your 63 and 57 compare?
Congrats! I have the '63 in Seminole Red. It's a great P-Bass for sure, and the stock pickup does sound nice, but I put an Aguilar HOT P bass pickup in mine and now it's perfect.
I played the 63 with my new funk trio tonight. I love the tone and playability of this bass.
The more and more I play the 57 the more I am inclined to think this is my Precision bass sound. I love the 63 but the 57 just has that clarity and articulation that is just slightly better and maybe that's due to the ash body or maple neck which have always been my personal favorites
