NBD: Fender Jaguar Modern Player

I bought one of these today,i liked the sound of the MP jazz bass,but was really looking for a P bass,i tried the MP Jaguar and was very impressed by it,i found that the Jag had more clarity and definition then the Jazz bass,i tested them side by side for over an hour,i just loved everything about the jag,and bought it there and then.:)

I don't know if it's the 'Koto' wood or the "Modern Player' pickups but the Jag has an awesome sound. Sure, it doesn't sound like my Stingrays but sounds better than my MIA Precision, 1974 Precision, Squier CV 60's Precision and both my Squier VM Jags. (one has block neck the other a fretless neck)

There is a lot of solid low end and a sweet midrange punch to the bass. The 'P' pickups are great. Plenty of volume from them that I had to engage the active switch on the GK head to keep it from triggering the clip light. The 'J' pickup appears to have 30% less output than the 'P' set and has the typical hum soloed that every Jazz bass I've ever owned/played has. With both pickups maxed and the tone maxed it produces a great sound live. Cutting the tone back 75-50 % produces quite a wide range of tonal possibilities.

And I'll say again, the neck is finished extremely well. Believe it or not the intonation right out of the box was dead on. The neck has some type of tinted finish but is not sticky at all. With the fret edges so smooth it makes for a very fast playing neck.

I don't care if is made in China it plays better than my MIA Precision. I had to return 2 brand new MIA Precision basses because I could not get the G string low enough with the high mass bridge that is installed on MIA Precision basses now. The one I kept I had to shim the neck. Will eventually install a vintage bridge which has a thinner base plate to get rid of the shim on the MIA P.

As I stated before there are ZERO blemishes in the finish of the body or neck. Pickup poles are exactly aligned with the strings. The pickup height adjustment was even correct! (check out the pics in my first post) It even uses smaller screws for the strap pins so Schaller straplocks fit perfect.

If you like the Jaguar body style you owe it to yourself to try one out. Make sure you bring an allen wrench to lower the action if need be. The one I got, right out of the box I only had to lower the D and G string slightly.

I'm pretty sure it's paint, probably much similar to the Geddy Lee's.

Still not decided on wich one to get...
Both the short scale & long scale Squier Jaguars at the local shop were beyond what I expected, but my only concern as far as the short scale goes - the Mustang might be a tad cooler. Especially the black on black with maple neck!
And for the long scale; the poles didn't align on the G-string at the J pup - would that mean a rotten apple, or is this common? The overtones still came through, couldn't hear a difference even soloing this pickup.
Some glue residue visable around the frets, but other than that a very nice Jazz-like neck. Probably wouldn't send it back if I had ordered it online, but still reluctant to order the MP without trying it first as the shop didn't have this one stock.

Get the Modern Player Jag. I have the Fender MP and the Squier VM Jag. The MP has a better neck and pickups . The MP is heavier both neck and body. The weight isn't an issue for me, the MP is overall a better instrument in my opinion

I asked this question in another thread but don't believe I got a response. How do the necks on the two Jags compares?
When you say the MP has a better neck, what exactly do you mean? When I played the two back to back in the store I found the Squier neck thinner and easier to play, but perhaps time would change that impression.

I have been A/Bing the MP Jazz with the double jazz Pups and the pawnshop Jag. Two different basses with two different sounds. The MP covers what my other basses have with a little bit of bridge oomph to help, easy to play and sounds great. The PS Jag has it's own thing, style aside it's a compliment to what I own now rather than a variation, for me it would be a good addition. I never play past the 12th fret anyway.

Thanks, but I couldn't resist so I got the Squier yesterday.
Had them get me another one first from the storage that did have a "clean" neck, but that one had a broken neck volume control.
So I figured; spend my friday afternoon cleaning it up (wich I did ; )
I still might actually get the MP also in the near future - since I have different bands that use alternative tunings - the maple neck seems to be more of a Precision so it could relief my Dirnt signature from dropped C tuning back to E flat. And what's cooler than a Jaguar? Two of them!

I've been waiting for months for one of these to show up for sale, finally snagged one from Reverb. Build quality is impressive. I seem to recall hearing that Fender discontinued them because of some issue with the Chinese maker, but that may have just been rumor. I sometimes wonder whether Fender decided they were a little too cool for the original $399 price point.
