NBD: Fender Jaguar Modern Player

I'm really GASing for this bass, at the moment! I love the looks and the body form, and it has a Precision Pup in it, AND a maple neck (even though it's more of a jazz neck - I prefer p-necks).

I would modify the pickguard (if I had one) to look like a Deluxe Jag, with the chrome control wheels and switches, and have the actual pickguard black. There are probably no cavities cut out for the switches though, am I right? I probably won't actually install an active circuit (I'm a passive pup guy), but I kinda like the look of the control plates on the Jag, has a sort of vintage vibe.

It's probably going to be a custom DIY job for me, in the end.

GAS is really strong now! xD

Today I wanted to see if one of my Squier VM Jaguar's tort pick guard would fit on my new Jaguar Modern Player. Impossible........

The split 'P' pickups on the MP Jaguar are in a completely different location than the VM Jaguar, and the 'J' pickup is too! Maybe it's not the 'Modern Player' pickups that make the Fender Jaguar sound better to me than the Squier Jaguar's Seymour Duncans but pickup location.

Here are the specs.

Fender MP Jaguar:
Edge of neck to 'P' pickup= 2 3/4 inches
Distance between 'P' and 'J' pickups= 2 1/2 inches
Bridge to 'J' pickup= 1 1/4 inches

Squier VM Jaguar (the ones with the block necks):
Edge of neck to 'P' pickup= 4 1/2 inches
Distance between 'P' and 'J' pickups= 1 3/4
Bridge to 'J' pickup= 1 3/4

Possibly the Fender MP Jaguar has the pickups in the "sweet" spot??

Sure, it doesn't sound like my Stingrays but sounds better than my MIA Precision, 1974 Precision, Squier CV 60's Precision and both my Squier VM Jags. (one has block neck the other a fretless neck)

There is a lot of solid low end and a sweet midrange punch to the bass. The 'P' pickups are great. Plenty of volume from them that I had to engage the active switch on the GK head to keep it from triggering the clip light. The 'J' pickup appears to have 30% less output than the 'P' set and has the typical hum soloed that every Jazz bass I've ever owned/played has. With both pickups maxed and the tone maxed it produces a great sound live. Cutting the tone back 75-50 % produces quite a wide range of tonal possibilities.

And I'll say again, the neck is finished extremely well. Believe it or not the intonation right out of the box was dead on. The neck has some type of tinted finish but is not sticky at all. With the fret edges so smooth it makes for a very fast playing neck.

I don't care if is made in China it plays better than my MIA Precision. I had to return 2 brand new MIA Precision basses because I could not get the G string low enough with the high mass bridge that is installed on MIA Precision basses now. The one I kept I had to shim the neck. Will eventually install a vintage bridge which has a thinner base plate to get rid of the shim on the MIA P.

As I stated before there are ZERO blemishes in the finish of the body or neck. Pickup poles are exactly aligned with the strings. The pickup height adjustment was even correct! (check out the pics in my first post) It even uses smaller screws for the strap pins so Schaller straplocks fit perfect.

If you like the Jaguar body style you owe it to yourself to try one out. Make sure you bring an allen wrench to lower the action if need be. The one I got, right out of the box I only had to lower the D and G string slightly.

And how is the neck dive?

Hey, I tried this bass out at GC and I thought the neck was a lot beefier than a J neck. It's kind of a hybrid, like a thinner version of the old '51 reissue neck.

these are MIM right?
ive been looking into them, slightly interested. not enough to pull the trigger just yet.
the website labels the body wood as "koto", i have never heard of it before.
how do you think it resonates compared to the normal alder?

NO, these are made in China.
This has been discussed several times on TB.
So has the whole "koto" issue. :rolleyes:
Resonate? It's wood. It'll be fine.

I'm not sure what "koto issue" has been discussed several times here on TB.

I've been a carpenter and cabinetmaker for the better part of 20 years. I know of several commercial applications for koto (african chestnut), but this is the first time that I've heard of it being used in mass-produced musical instruments. So far, information on it as a body wood is pretty scarce...unless you want to link those koto discussion threads that you speak of.

Otherwise, according to bass4u's report, the new MP Jag apparently sounds pretty darn good.

So I am counting 8" between neck and bridge on the VM.
And 6 1/2" on the MP.
Is one a shortscale?

I played one of these at a GC while I was on a trip last week. Compared to a Squier VM Jag, it definitely sounded similar. Of course, it's hard to judge while at a Guitar Center, but the MP Jag had the best fretwork out of the Fenders and Squiers, from American to Classic Vibe. I liked the neck profile. It was only a 1.5" nut, which I normally despise, but it was thicker front to back. Played great for a bass that needed a little bit of a truss rod adjustment.
