NBD: Fender Mustang Reissue

Fun bass. I had one for a minute and loved the tone. Kinda regret selling it but I am a big guy and I just don't look right wearing small or shorter scale basses.

Ha! Im 6'1 and close to 300 pounds. This looks small on me and my P Junior looks ridiculous. However, I couldn't care less about how a bass looks on me. Tone, comfort and playability are far more important to me than looks will ever be. If you played guitar, you would have an even smaller instrument than a short scaled bass on you. So you wouldn't play guitar cause they didn't look good on you?

No guitar looks good on me. But then again you should hear my guitar playing ;-)

Oh man, that's disappointing to hear because I ordered a Rascal that gets here on Monday! My Epiphone EB-0 is the same. Shorts scale but feels like a long scale. I'll let you know about the Mustang if I decide to sell it. Should make up my mind over the weekend.

The Rascal is a really nice bass. It has a long body. Just look at how much wood is behind the bridge compared to your Mustang. That is why it plays like a long scale. It's definitely a keeper. Hopefully it'll be one of those 'rare' Fenders one day. To me, the pickups, although very versatile, are weak sounding. I've contemplated buying a new pick guard and dropping in a Cabronita pickup. I think it'll sound good and keep the chrome and pearloid look of the original. New pots and input would be necessary. Everything attaches to the pick guard so I could just drop it the replacement at will. Some routing may be needed.

Yea, I like thump and growl, not a fan of weak pickups but it DOES have guitar pickups so I wasn't expecting it to be real powerful. I do like all the different combos of pickups though. Hardly any stores carry SS basses, so its impossible to play these before buying which makes it kind of a crapshoot. Not sure if I want to open it and mess with it and having to re-pack and ship it back if I dont like it or just refuse it and send it back.

Sounds to me like you found what you were looking for with the P Junior.
I'm thinking that you'll probably return the Rascal, and hoping that you
pass the Mustang on to someone on this forum.

They're starting to show up less often. Hopefully Fender/Squier will
come to their senses and start making them again.

Yea, we will see. Im not sure I could just keep the JR as my primary bass due to the freakishly small size. For recording yes, but if I get to the point of performing live, not sure that would work so well. I think I might try some rounds on the Mustang. The flats might be throwing me off as they are more mellow and not as aggressive sounding.

I've had pretty good luck with GHS Bass Boomers on my Mustang. Then again, I like Chromes better.
