NBD: Fender Roadworn 58 P Bass

I owned a 58 Roadworn and before that a pre-CBS 1958 Precision. They played, sounded and felt very much the same. As for weight, I did measurements on these instruments (as well as on my '62 pre-CBS Jazz) and found that the bodies and headstocks are 1/8" thinner front to back than present day Fenders. I think this accounts more than anything for the light weight.

Yes. There has been a certain amount of discussion of this. There is a photo comparison somewhere on one of the Roadworn threads. However, I had a classic '60s Jazz that was an '01, the first year they came out I think. Fine bass, but the resonance of both the Roadworn Jazzes I have blow it away.

The only explanation I can offer is that the materials are slightly different. Finish is a factor, yes. Body/neck wood? A well-respected Lexington, Kentucky Fender dealer and luthier, who is not known for hype or any kind of BS told me he thought the Roadworn wood seemed "baked," light, and dry—so perhaps the wood really is different. The thickness of the Roadworn body reportedly matches vintage thickness pretty well, maybe even that has an effect. Might be nice to see the RW thickness compared to the Classic line.

Congrats on a great bass I love it and these basses get much deserved love everywhere it's one of the best models Fender has ever put out.

I remember someone on here got a great deal b/c GC had listed the road worn bass as "scratch and dent" or something to that effect.

I actually prefer the roadworn fenders to many of their high end models. To me, they actually play, sound and feel better. For whatever reason, they work. I often think about picking up one of the RW jazz basses because it's nothing like my gaggle of attitude basses.

They have a great rw jazz out at dicks that they have had for some time. I just bought the rw p bass they had I bet you could get a hell of a deal on the jazz

Yeah, I've played that one a few times. Dick doesnt cut too many deals though. I love that store though.
