NBD -- Finally a Fender!

Ya, I've had both the QP J & P pickups in basses in the past and have enjoyed them for some projects, but you can never really tame the in your face attitude. Great if thats what you're after.
I've come to appreciate pickups with complexity, not just high output, that is what the gain control is for....
QPs do have quite a hot output - that's part of what gives them their particular character - so anything else is definitely going to seem quieter. That's what the gain control on amps is for though ;)

Agreed. My Squier P came with a Duncan Designed pickup that was essentially a QP (huge polepieces, hot output), and would probably be up my alley if I played rock. I do not play rock

No, it goes away when I touch the strings. One pickup or two makes no difference.
If you shield the cavities, which is a pain on a Jazz bass because it has 3, the buzz will go away.
I would have asked for a good discount since the nut is cut off-center - the G string is closer to the edge of the fretboard than the E string. That would drive me crazy but many people don't even notice that kind of thing.

...

I installed shielding yesterday. COMPLETELY SILENT now! I forgot to take pics of the cavity shielding but here is what I did manage to snap:

No shielding whatsoever:
