NBD: finally landed a P5!

(Two additional black guitars have since found me as well.)I chose black from among other options a couple times as a teenager, but since then, black has mostly chosen me. I had a cherry Thunderbird for a long time and will now sell off a dreamy orange Spector that I just can't get my sound out of, but if I ever do a refinish on anything, I will probably paint this P5 ... black.
This store is the only place I've found for the guards Neagle Luthier , on Reverb.
I have the black one on my watch list, but the leading candidate to replace the stock pickup (which I will likely do) is a Lace Aluma-P ... if it's not a huge pain: it's not a drop-in replacement. If I can get a pickguard to fit the Aluma-P (I hear Pickguardian's good), and if it just means a few new screw holes in the cavity where nobody will see them anyway, that works. Otherwise, I'm thinking Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder, which is a drop-in replacement. I would like lows to match the pointy thing in my avatar (Lace in place there, and despite all appearances, that thing plays and sounds like a P).
The stock pups are truly pretty good.
Since you are looking toward symmetrical shells that opens a whole world of choices
A good P5 is an elusive quarry, but worth the squeeze for sure! I found mine in Lakland Skyline flavor. I rarely play it in my current project, but when I do, I wonder why I don't play it more.

I have kept an eye on those 55-01s. A buddy of mine (decidedly partial to proper precision basses) suggested they would sound more like the Ibanez ATKs I already had, but I wonder if he was thinking of the one with the skinny pickup in the neck position. What's your experience with the Lakland: more like a P than a Ray?
I have the same bass and it's really a nice instrument. I've got la-bella low tension fats on mine and it's really pretty smooth.
I have one of these and for the price tag, they are ridiculously good basses for the money.

1) Hard to find a replacement pickup that's a big jump over the OEM, including the replacement from the MIA P5
2) The bridge is OK, but the travel can be too short to not end up with silk on the saddle: However HipShot makes a drop-in replacement that's a real improvement. (hmmmm . . . . . . 'Silk on the Saddle' is a country song title if I ever heard one . . . . . )
These were a LOT of bass for the money, and without a lot of mumbo-jumbo really is a five-string P.

those are on mine as well, the LTF's work really well on this bass..
I have the USA p5 pups in mine--- a little "meatier" tone not a huge improvement over the stock.
CTS pots switchcraft jack, sprague orange drop cap.
I wouldn't mind changing the tuners and the bridge on mine but it's not really necessary. Having said that a nice hipshot bridge and set of tuners would double the cost of the bass. Sometimes it's just best to leave well enough alone.
I'm not motivated to change the tuners, they're fine, better than the ones on the MIM fender I had.
I did cut a bone nut for mine.
To me it's sort of about what you want to do with the bass. I have it for kicking around the house (bathroom...) when I don't want to take anybody else out of their casses and when I'm playing a gig that I'd rather not take an expensive bass to. I have obscenely expensive basses and it's nice to have one I don't have to worry about.
I suppose I'm in even less of a hurry to replace anything, then. What most people would call the E string (I tune GCGCF, bwahaha) was doing the natural chorus thing on arrival. I think rewrapping the string more carefully at the tuner took care of it, but I noticed that the squiggly wraps at the ball end of the string had originally been on the saddle (no silk on the D'Addarios that cane with it, but "Squiggly Wraps on the Saddle" doesn't have the same ring to it).
Awesome score!! Congratulations!!! Know you'll love it almost as much as I love mine.
Will definitely be interested to see what mods you decide to go with.
