So I have had this for about the week now. Its kinda sad how you can get these for such a low price. Good for the buyer I guess. Anyways, this is my first G&L, a CLF L-2000. I was not planning on buying stuff anymore but I could not resist this. Sounds too hot when I first took it home, but after some reading here working with the volume knob really helped. It is very well made, and sounds very modern/hi-fi. I can cop some "vintage" tones too but I already have a P and J with flats and mutes for that. And surprisingly light weight, just at 8lbs on my bathroom scale. I THINK this might have cured my bass GAS, but you guys know how that goes. Here it is, and if you can't tell I like instruments in clear/natural finish.

PS: as for the tone, yes the MFD's have enormous amounts of output and they will overload the inputs to everything you own. All of which is still designed for the humble P and J passive output levels .

Interestingly, I have found my L2K sounds really meaty with compression. I run it through my Cali76 guitar compressor almost full-time - I do have to lower the volume a bit to keep the distortion down, but the result is very thick and punchy (can't think of better words to describe it).

So you might try some compression on it. The MFD has an extremely high dynamic range, so the wildly up/down note volume syndrome with inconsistencies in your plucking will be hugely magnified on the L2K. You can get away with being a little inconsistent on your humble P bass, but on the L2K a slightly hard pluck will blow your entire audience out of the club.

This is one of the main things to get used to with the L2K if you're accustomed to traditional basses. It's like dropping a thermonuclear weapon into the middle of a collection of bows and arrows and crossbows...

Well done! If you're going to get your first G&L, an L-2000 is exactly the place to start. You have many, many interesting tones to discover—and at 8 lbs(!) you won't be in pain discovering them.

My bet is you have a new #1. The last two basses I'd bought were my first G&Ls. Now my only problem is how do I justify owning a bunch of case queens that probably won't see the light of day.
