NBD - G&L LB-100

It seems like there have been a lot of these "NBD G&L LB-100" threads lately. I guess that's because they are awesome basses!

Finally got mine on Thursday. So far I love it. Problem is I now have to decide what my "go-to" bass is: my LB-100 or my G&L JB. But that's a problem I can live with.

Yeah, I live about .5 miles from Rocket. I drive past every day.

They rock and it's great to be able to buy local. Shocking I don't have like 8 basses (I have bought 2 from them).

I'm pretty sure I'm the reason Greg hasn't finished the showroom there. He must know that if he does finish, he will never get me to leave.

btw - I saw your bass (or its twin) on the G&L page and loved it.

Tell Greg to add a few fold out couches to the new showroom. I'm currently thinking about a JB bass, wondering if they still have any Empress bodies.
As for G&Ls page, Greg told me that WAS my bass right before they shipped it.

So this is why I love Talkbass.

I've been playing my LB-100 for a couple of weeks and have been loving it. But a couple of things were bugging me a little. I felt like the bass got too boomy when I "dug in" - especially the E string.

After seeing everyone rave about how GHS Precision flats sound on these, I decided to cash in my Guitar Center credit that I've had for 7 years and order a set. 2 weeks later (speedy shipping!!) I got the strings and everyone is right! These sound great. AND, now I can dig in without boominess! Plus these things sound fat as hell with the tone rolled off.

This new development plus Greg's (Rocket Music) awesome set-up means my poor JB is hanging on the wall much more than before. It's not going anywhere (except maybe to Greg for a set-up - I didn't realize it was bad until I got the new bass. I try but clearly do not have "pro-skills").

So I will add my voice to the chorus: LB-100+GHS Precision Flats = Sonic Gold!

Status report: I took the LB-100 to 2 band practices in a row and it felt and sounded great! The guys in the band agreed. I took the JB last night and, aside from a couple of songs, found myself wishing I had the LB-100. It just sounds better with the band. "Fits better in the mix" as I guess they say. I also find myself playing more "laid back" on the LB - may be the flatwounds.

I was concerned that I messed up by going with the #12 neck and not the #8 which I am used to (and love). It still feels different but I made a big discovery: I replaced the strap pegs with locks (which was really hard to do) and now the bass hangs much more like the JB - the reach is a bit better since the strap is out from the body about 1/2 an inch and the neck feels more similar. So I think it was the reach that was bugging me and not the width of the neck.

So yeah, still a happy camper.

I'm not surpised your bass sounds good with flat wounds. I have TI Flats on mine and I love the way it sits in the mix. I've never tried GHS flats. It's kind of difficult to replace flats and try news ones because they don't really go bad the way round wounds do. My bass had these strings when I got it. I have been tempted to try rounds on it to see the difference though. I guess I could always save the these strings and go back to them if I don't like anything else better.

My band mates also prefer my LB-100 to any of my other basses. They always ask me to "bring the red one". There are a few songs where I would prefer my Fender AmStd Jazz or my MTD Artist, but most of the stuff we play does sound better with my G&L. Glad you're still liking yours.
