NBD: Ibanez Lefty SR100 P-style bass

I just wanted to mention that the bass is a keeper but the Ampeg BA108v2 was a dog. I took it to an acoustic rehearsal with a guy playing electronic drums UNAMPLIFIED and the amp started farting out when I turned it up to 12:00. I'm not a loud abusive player and we were doing pretty mellow music. I think for performance the Gallien Krueger MB108 was light years better than the Ampeg. I'm looking around for a small 108 or 110 cabinet for my GK MB200 for living room practice. I'll update when I find one. There are getting to be some pretty good little cabs out there! :thumbsup:

Update update: Bought a small 1x8" passive PA cab with tweeter for my MB200 for living room practice. I'm looking for a good P bass pickup for my Ibby P clone. Thinking of the Nordstrands. Anyone have any ideas which ones sound the deepest? Thanks.

Update update update: I ended up with a GK MB108 combo. It's light years the best combo I've owned in the last five years and I've tried out almost all out there. It's loud, has that growly tone and I've even used it for quiet rehearsals. I did push it might hard the last couple rehearsals and it has a bit of backend distortion when the note decays. I'm not sure yet if it's the bass or the amp. If it's the amp I'll have to contact GK to see if I can buy a new 8" speaker or.... maybe an Eminence Neo?

I bought it from eBay and it arrived in poor condition, needing a lot of work. I stuck it in my spare room with the other basses and put it out of my mind. One night, while watching a movie with wife, I took the bass completely apart and scrubbed it from top to bottom. I added a strap lock on the bottom, two volume controls, and oiled the neck. When I reassembled it, I put on a set of Hartke roundwound strings. Man the bass sounded sweet! Nice and thumpy like a P bass should sound. The notes were big, fat, and round like a vintage P bass.

The neck is 41mm which is 3mm wider than the usual "fast and narrow" Ibanez necks. For some reason, the wider neck feels really good, and surprisingly easy to play. I think because of the wider neck, I have that deeper tone. While comfortable, the neck feels substantial.

If you like Ibanez, and have been looking for a single pickup passive, I highly recommend one of these guys. The bass feels really good in my hands, it has a nice round tone, and it's well made. You can get these for a song on eBay, they come up now and then. But if you want one get it soon because they've been out of production for at least 10 years. Highly recommended! :thumbsup:

I feel like such a dope reading your story. I could’ve bought one just like yours for $50 but it buzzed like crazy so I passed.

Then about 2 years later I saw the same bass in the local pawn so I grabbed it, grounded myself to it with a wire, and plugged into an old GK and Yorkville 4x10 and I couldn’t believe how great it sounded and I never noticed the first time that it wasn’t your usual Ibby toothpick neck but something more traditional.

By the time I had the coin for it it was already gone.

Would still like the rest of that setup though lol.

Bass update: I've become unhappy with the tone of the OEM bass pickup. I'm looking for a different pickup. I might try the Fender Vintage P bass but I'm open to suggestions. I'm not somewhere I can listen to pickups but I do read opinions on TB. I'm also considering the EMG and Nordy pickups.

If you keep and eye on Craigslist or eBay you can still find these for around $100. Good luck, hope you fine one-- it's a great bass to play! :thumbsup:

Just found one on Kijiji (no one uses CL around here) in Winnipeg. Have a friend going over there next week. They want to sell it with an amp though and I’m not interested in that so hopefully I can talk them otherwise.:smug:

@Heavy Blue did you ever get the Ibby SR100? By the way, I changed my mind about the pickup. I took my bass to my office and I have a DNA DNS112 clone cab and a GK MB200 and man the SR100 sure sounded good! As I mentioned in another thread, it has a nice THICK, resonant tone through the bigger amp. I'm glad because I only do the necessary work needed on my basses, I'm not really interested in doing a lot of modification on them.

Nah I didn’t wind up with it. It seems to me that they get sold pretty quickly. It sounded surprisingly good (& thick) through an old GK Backline 350 and Yorkville B410.

Hey lefty! :thumbsup: As I mentioned earlier, I didn't quite care for the pickup either until I cranked the amp up a bit. Then the pickup really developed a thick, round Pbass tone. All I need to do now is get some new hardware for it and I'd like to dye the neck an ebony.
