NBD: Jack Casady Epiphone

Just got this off of Ebay. Bought it from Jeremy Plog of the Jackie Greene Band. He even played this bass on the Conan O'brien Show.

It was strung with flats. He also included some rounds but I haven't tried them yet. Having fun with the flats. The 3-way impedance selector is interesting. It does give you 3 very distinctly different sounds. I have to believe you would get 2 completely different sounds with roundwound strings, so lots of possibilities.

But, with the selector on low (50) I get the sound I fell in love with when I tried it at Guitar Center. A very clear, low, booming sound. That sound, and the 34 inch scale, was what attracted me to this model. Most of the semi-hollows have a smaller scale.

The hard case is BEAT UP. He warned me about this. Guess that is the drawback with buying from a touring musician. But it still protects the bass very well.

The only negatives I have is that 1) He had removed the pickguard and lost it. I really like the look of the pickguard on a semi-hollow. So, if you know anyone that wants to sell one, shoot me a message. and 2) The pickup ring is cracked (I knew this from the auction pics). Doesn't effect anything. Just doesn't look good. Can I order Epiphone parts from GC or other stores?

I've seen parts on ebay occasionally, not often. There's a generic Gibson style pickguard that fits, but has a cutout for a 2nd pickup. Finding the JC specific ones, less often. There's a custom cream colored floral one on there right now, fwiw. I think I've decided to make my own from a piece of hw store maple and black stain - I haven't been able to find a black one for my project. (Well, there's the 3 layer b/w/b with the 2 pickup cutouts, not what I want, I'll just make one.)

And yes, congrats! Be glad the seller kept it in the case so the case took the beating, not the bass! I love these things.

I have the silver burst limited edition, love it for the same reasons you stated, have it strung with flat's also! In fact, I removed the pickguard, and would let it go to you for $10 plus shipping!
Oooh - that has the black pickup and trim? I wish I could find those parts!

The problem is, I need the hardware also, not just the plastic.

For some reason, JC parts seem to be unobtainable! I could use a replacement Varitone switch; the 500k setting is a little off, sometimes doesn't engage; have to wiggle it, then it's OK
Yeah, very hard to find the JC-specific parts anywhere, the pickguard arm hw is generic, but the pickguard itself isn't. I can't find the pickup anywhere. I think any 3 position rotary switch (with enough poles) could replace the Varitone switch, but I haven't looked closely. One of mine has kind of come slightly loose on the inside, twisted in the housing - still works, but positions & pointers are off.
