It's about 1 3/4". It is a narrow neck compared to a p bass neck. That is what I like about the JC. The neck felt soooo good when I tried it at GC.

I am not a physicist, but I suspect that the Mod Bar adds mass to the bridge which in turn transmits vibrations back and forth between the body and strings. Tone range seems larger to me.
For the record, I took off the strings it came with and just put on some Fender Flats. So far.... I like it.

Oh, the neck is definitely not narrow. It's very wide. I forgot the name for that style of neck, but it's definitely not an Ibanez neck type.
Actually, The photo is from when I took ownership of this JC; I purchased it from a TB member, he had made the mods as you see it in the photo. Subsequently, I did replace the varitone knob back to the OE one, as he also included all the parts he had upgraded in the deal! Besides restringing, that's all I did!

I haven't yet, still figuring that out. I'm going to have to route a small horizontal slot in the body, corresponding to the one in the underside of the bridge, for the wires, and then drill from there on the diagonal into the lower chamber, just like the standard bridge ground. It will be out of sight under the bridge. How exactly I'm going to integrate the wiring, still working on, as this project also has 2 Curtis Novak BS/DS darkstars going in.
Ahhh. Nice!! That's great. Two questions. One, what strings did you put on yours. I've got D'Addario flats on mine. And, two, in your signature a see you've got, or have played, a Fender P and a J. Which one do you prefer? Being a fan of the JC, I'd think you'd say P.
I have it strung with La Bella Flats, 45-105, I believe. It came to me with the D'Addario's on it, and I have D'Addarios on my P-Bass. Hard to quantify the difference, so just to confuse myself further, I put the La Bella's on my Jazz Bass. I like the feel of theses strings, the tone is incredible, as I play through either my Fender Rumble 350 combo, or (my main rig) Ampeg SVT 7 Pro with the SVT 410 HLF cab, I am a devotee of the Ampeg sound. So, to answer the question you posed, it's hard to say which of the two Fender's I prefer, I have them because they each have a distinctive sound and feel, and I agonize over which to bring to play on a gig! THat includes the JC as well! I'm playing this Thursday behind a friend in a small club/tavern; he plays acoustic/electric 'folk music' style, and for that gig I'm bringing the Rumble and the JC; a few weekends ago I played in a Blues/Jazz club behind a great blues harp/vocalist by the name of Vince Johnson, and brought the Jazz and Ampeg rig! Hope that answered your question!
