After going many years without buying a bass, I started frequenting TalkBass. This led me to thoughts about 5-strings and the realization that I just didn't have enough instruments. Countless hours of research and analysis, trips to music stores, and "watched" TB classifieds ensued before I finally made a decision. So, to give back to all the folks that contributed to my GAS and this folly...

I present my new Lakland Skyline 55-02 in translucent purple! It's a well put together piece of gear, with a great feel, and weighs in at a relatively light 9.2 lbs. I've only had a few hours of playing on it, but the 35" scale doesn't seem to bother me. (That extra string is going to take a bit of getting used to, though.) I am enjoying the variety of sounds I can pull from the pickups/preamp. Looking forward to playing it with the full band!

I have the exact same bass!

I never thought I’d have a purple bass, but mine snuck up on me!

If weight is an issue (it definitely is for me) it takes a little research but as apparent from this beautiful bass they are out there. 9.2 lbs is
a very comfortable weight. A great find on a 55-02 most are a just bit heavier. I once owned a 55-02 lined fretless. It was also on the lighter side.
By comparison with my 55-94 the only thing I added was a Tortoise Shell pickguard and a bone nut. Frankly the original Delrin nut was not all that different and the pickguard was just a cosmetic affectation. :roflmao:

Wow, nice finish on that!
I went whole hog five string about a year ago--only took a four string to a gig if I knew the bandleader was a fiver hater. I was totally comfortable after a couple months. Now it's second nature. I've had them on and off since the 90's, but previously I only ever used one "when I needed the low notes" so I never really adapted (now I use the whole B string and don't get lost:laugh:).
And of course, now you're gonna need another one, so you can have fivers w rounds and flats.....;)
