NBD: My First Jazz Bass

My first jazz bass arrived today, a Fender 75th Anniversary. I’ve wanted a jazz for a long time now but could never decide on which one. Picked this because I want to change out all the hardware to black since I hate chrome and I think the silver-ish color along with the matching headstock would look good with that. My main bass is a Stingray Special in charcoal sparkle so it goes with the whole sparkly color with black hardware vibe too.

Plays great so far. Need to do a setup but honestly it’s not bad out of the box. I tried one in a store and the frets were awful but I rolled the dice on ordering this online and I’m pleasantly surprised with how smooth the neck and frets are.

Nice, I love the color!

Black hardware will be a nice match with the pickguard.

On my (heavily modified) Jazz, I find that backing off the bridge pickup just slightly brings out some magic in the tone. Try experimenting with blending the pickups to find your magic.
So far I’m liking neck at 100%, bridge and tone at around 50%. Sounds really mean with my pedalboard with all the stops pulled.

Aaaaaaa, so you're looking at a new rig for your new bass eh? That's right. Nice choice by the way. That baby looks sweet. Now, slap some quarter pounders in it, and smash in the bottom three frets :)

Congrats on a great looking jazz. For what it's worth I have several jazz basses. A mix of 60's and 70's pickup spacing. As well as strings. Rounds on some, flats and pressure wounds on others.

I read someone say in another tread that a jazz bass will sound like a jazz bass. That may be true but you can greatly influence that sound. Some may be subtle but just like the big picture in music those subtleties can lift a song...

Experiment.

Have fun getting to know your new friend.

Dave

Nice bass (congrats on grabbing a quality instrument)...

I’m actually curious about your Big Muff Pi pedal...

What genre music do you typically play do you like/dislike about it???

I have been pedal shopping for a while and keep coming back to that and a few others, but have yet to pull the trigger...

Just curious...

Thanks! \m/

It’s only the second distortion pedal that I’ve owned but it’s amazing. Tone control has a lot of good range. It’s pumping out fuzz all the time no matter what your settings are but it doesn’t get muddied up like the handful of other distortion pedals I’ve tried. Works great with my other pedals too. Drive up on the VT, OC-5 on, and it’s still a really clear, creamy, and mean sound. I hear the other versions will sound different but this is the only version I’ve tried.

When using the fuzz I’m pretty much just playing modern rock and punk. SOAD, RATM, Slipknot as examples of the more popular staples.

Exactly. Figured I can’t be a RATM fan without having a jazz and SVT next to my Stingrays.
