NBD Peavey Palaedium

@B-Mac

I just wanted to be clear on the subject of the Grinch, I am of the understanding that it is a prototype model albeit it was not the only prototype. I recall Jeff talking about it in an interview from around the time of the HBC tour where he mentioned that it was made in America with a slightly thicker body than usual, though I don't think he was quite sure of why this was. You'll note from looking at it that the top is a little different and the woods seem to 'pop' more under the clearcoat. That bass is was definitely sold to a guy in Norway in 2015.

As for the other prototype, it was owned and sold on by a Talkbass user calledShawn Tarnoczy aka DharmaShawn. I messaged him on here a couple of years ago after seeing the thread where he had sold it. He invited me to Whatsapp him since he was rarely using TB by that point and said he would check his records to see if he could find out where it had went. In the end, he never did say where it had went and started talking about other things (I recall him talking about a Carl Thompson bass he owned). In the end, I didn't push him for the details of where it had went as he said he couldn't remember and I was already reaching just by getting in touch with him. Sadly, he passed away last year, if I recall. When I consider that, it seems to be of little consequence that that one bass got away.

India, The Grinch is not a prototype. I is an actual finished bass made for Jeff. There is only one prototype of the Patchwork. That is the one pictured in the catalog. It was made from a Basic and was a work in progress with Jeff's involvement. After he gave the okay on the prototype they made one just for him which is the Grinch. There are only 3 Patchwork basses in existence.
Check the links I posted including DharmaShawn (RIP) posts. DharmaShawn's was the actual prototype which is the same bass pictured in the catalog. See the links I posted.

All of this has been verified by Brad Mader and Scott Frazer at Dean.

Also, the Bartolini pups are all custom wound on the USA and Czech basses. They are not 'off the shelf' with the exception of the housing.

Hi B-Mac,

The coils in these soapbars are proprietary but they are very very similar to the 9J1. Very. So the M34J B&T pickups are very close. But I am not really clear if that was the question you were asking or not. They are not "off the shelf".

Best Regards,
Doug

So, they are not off the shelf, but seem to be more of a tweak to existing pups, which is my take on 'Custom Wound'. They're different, but not much different.

Looks great!
I'm picking up another Palaedium tonight and am planning on doing the blacked-out treatment as well.
I thought about doing this a while back, but I’ve always been used to seeing them with gold hardware and, tbh, to me it’s just how they look....
Yours look more immaculate than mine though, maybe that’s why I’m not so fussy :)
I actually prefer worn gold hardware to pristine new stuff - I like the nickel look as it wears over the years.

So Andy’s palaedium looks like it is a slightly different color than Woodys. Is that just the pic or are those basses indeed a different color?
That photo of mine is pretty much the colour it is - it’s sort of “amber”, I suppose. I’ve seen others that are pretty much the same as mine but, as we say, Woody’s looks more “blonde”.
That’s probably why it looks better with black hardware than gold....

So,this past Friday, I had an appointment with the guitar tech/wizzard. Over 2 hours of nonstop work, he removed all the original pots/wiring, installed the complete tone monster harness/output jack, which is all wired together without soldering. The cavity was too tight to put the bulkier varitone control in the rear tone pot postion by the output jack,so it is now in the middle position, and the pan pot is in the rear postion.
He replaced the BA bridge with the Hipshot KA bridge, direct swap,no modding. It’s an ingenious design where the saddles can be moved laterally to several different positions to get whatever spacing works best for various basses. It came with brass saddle inserts, and they were PLENTY bright, so no need to use the optional stainless steel inserts,at least not with the rw DR Pure Blues strings i have on there now.
He then did a fret leveling, followed by recrowning the frets, and condtioning the ebony fretboard, and giving the whole bass a polish before restringing and doing the intonation/setup. The neck looks like brand new, and the DR roundcore nickle strings have the lower tension/flexibility feel i prefer. I plugged the bass in when i got home to get an idea of how it sounds now. There are a LOT of great tones available, but i think i will most likely tend to use the “full open” first postion the most. (It’s the same sound as with the factory wiring setup with the tone control fully open.)
Really looking forward to hearing the bass at band rehearsal next Saturday.

Just picked up a near-mint Palaedium this afternoon. Only a couple little nicks here and there and still has the plastic on the cavity cover! It’ll get the blacked-out treatment this week.

Now that I got this one, if someone is looking for a Palaedium, there is one listed here. The seller is willing to ship too. Invalid Link Removed
