NBD Peavey Palaedium

Just picked up a near-mint Palaedium this afternoon. Only a couple little nicks here and there and still has the plastic on the cavity cover! It’ll get the blacked-out treatment this week.

Now that I got this one, if someone is looking for a Palaedium, there is one listed here. The seller is willing to ship too. Invalid Link Removed
Wow,the gold hardware on yours doesn’t even appear to be tarnished! Nice score!
Edit-just looked at the linked sale-a beautiful RED Palaedium!
Very Tempting, as i love a red guitar, but I don’t need it now.

Just finished up with new knobs, Hipshot tuners, and an Omega bridge.

I have a question for you, gentleman. Out of curiosity, it sounds like you decided to switch out the hardware due to aesthetics as opposed to the quality of the original parts. Would say that this is accurate?
In my case, yes. The original tuners and bridge still work fine. (Although the bridge did have a bit of rust/corrosion,and all of the finishes were worn off,so everything had a gold/silver patina).
I don’t know what the original tuner’s ratios are,but the new Gotohs are 20:1.
And the new hipshot bridge had some cool improvements over the BAii,so although the look was the impetus for changing,it also seemed to me that i would be improving the functionality over the original equipment.

Woodyng2,

How is the Varitone working out for you? Do you find it’s giving you more useable tones than the stock 250K pot?
I’ve only been able to play it through my apartment practice amp at a low volume so far, but i am liking the varitone settings very much. The first postion sounds just like the standard set up with the tone wide open. There’s a few settings that really seem to emphasize certain frequencies, that you won’t get with the standard set up. It seems like a couple of the middle settings eliminate the 2-pickup “chirp”,which is a good thing.
Most of the time i prefer simple contols, and don’t like to have too many options;),
but I like the new setup just fine.
Edit:just wanted to also say the Tone Monster wiring harness was $40,and seems quite decent for that price. I might’ve preferred to spend a bit more for better quality american made components, but these seem pretty good.

Yes, I’d concur with that - some of the gold plating has worn off my bridge, tuners and neck plate but everything works perfectly. And although I did, for a brief moment, consider changing to black hardware, actually seeing photos of Palaediums that have been changed has convinced me to keep the original hardware. This is no criticism of anyone’s choice - if anything, those basses now look too “new” for a thirty year old bass.
But then mine is a darker colour (for some weird reason...) and also I’m no style guru ;-)

The only problem is that if I want to fit a Hipshot D-tuner then I’ll have to “age” it, otherwise it’ll stick out like a sore thumb.

For me, it’s purely aesthetics. I prefer the more subtle look of black over gold, especially on lighter-colored basses.
The original parts were definitely high-quality.

Thanks. I’m always amazed at how much time shaping you can get with just the blend and tone knobs on these, so I was curious if the tone knob with the presets lost any of that flexibility. Glad you’re enjoying it!

That should be "tone shaping" not "time shaping" in my post above. The Peavey pickups are powerful, but not *that* powerful. ;)

So, I took the PV to our band practice this past Saturday and was just blown away at how great it sounded.
It can do a great warm P bass sort of tone, as well as an all-out treble clank that rivals my Spector and Rickenbackers. I even had one song where I used the classic Jeff Berlin bridge pickup sound.
This bass is so easy to play i find myself doing all kinds of little runs where i’d usually just hit a single note.
Very extremely pleased!
