NBD: Peavey TL-Five

Apparently, I just cannot stop myself. GC Used Gear really does turn out some good gear for cheap on a pretty regular basis.

This baby is so mint, it is unbelievable. And the case even has the original hang tag ($1,499 original price!).

That's my kitten, Stanley Humbucker, coming into the picture to check out the new axe.

UPS delivered at lunch. I waited to go to lunch until I got the delivery notice email and then went home to bring it inside. I plugged it in, tuned it up, and took her for a spin for a couple of minutes. It seems pretty heavy. Like, my G&L L-2500 heavy. But man does it sound great! First my G-Bass and now this. I'm really developing a major liking for a 3-band EQ with a sweepable mid-freq.

I'll have to compare them back to back, but it seems like the B string is more tight-sounding than any of my other 5-strings (G&L, Cirrus, G-V, and TRB5).

The bridge doesn't look stock? Is yours possibly different because it's the older model with Super Ferrite pickups? I was told this bass is all original.

I had to pay sales tax, buying it from a GC, so my total was $550, delivered (in its OHSC).

Maybe MNAirhead will poke his head in here and shed some light. I asked him once about the bridge on my G-V and his reply suggested that possibly different years came with different bridges. But I can see that this bridge is different than the one on a red TL-Five he sold on here last year.

That's a US Cirrus bridge. I wouldn't worry about it, it's nice.

I had one exactly like that that has been professionnally defretted, best fretless I ever played. I drop a few tears when I think I got rid of it....

The bridge on mine was different than on yours. I'll see if I could get an old picture tonight to compare...

renniw, I googled for pics of TL-Fives and found several good ones that MNAirhead posted in the Classifieds here last year. The bridge on that one is definitely different than on mine. The one on his looked like a gold version of the GOTOH on my G-Bass and G-V.

I had one of the first gen TL-5's. What a great bass. Had to sell when I struck out on my own from the midwest to So Cal many years ago. Sure do miss it. Congrats on the score.

Congrats! Well now I am curious about the bridge. They made the TL line until I believe 1993. Anyone know when the first Cirrus came out? Is it possible in late production they could have put that bridge on at the factory? Or more likely someone did that at a later date. Oh and I actually have 3 1st generation TL's that the battery door is still intact! I think that is some kind of miracle. The 2nd generation they changed to the oval compartment held on by a couple of screws.

When I get home, I'll get the serial number and see if I can find out from Peavey when it was made and if the bridge is original. I called there on Wednesday to order Millennium preamps and talked to Steve in guitar parts. He seemed nice and very knowledgeable. He told me the part number for the Millennium preamp without hesitation and without having to look it up.
