I remember when the Blackstar's came out. Mainly associated with Mike from the Smithereens. May have even been an informal signature bass for him.

Mike Mesaros was formally pictured with a Blackstar for RIC publicity. There are also Smithereen's publicity photos with him holding a Shadow. Don't know if he had any other Ricks.

The white parts on current models are nice, but to me, rics look so much more slick with the black appointments.

Out of curiosity, what's the difference between a Rick 4001 and 4003?

From the FAQ on the RIC website:

"While both instruments had dual truss rods, the 4001 one had "old style" rods which only had nuts on the top, whereas the 4003 has nuts at both ends of the neck. Due to the different rod styles, a later model 4003 will have larger rounded holes at the end of the neck to accommodate the nuts, while an older 4001 will have small rectangular holes.

In addition, the 4001 was wired with a capacitor on the treble pickup, which cut all the low-end sound out of the signal. In the 4003, this design feature was dropped."

The pickups are hotter on a 4003 as well.
Most 4001 pups are around 8k while 4003 pups ran as high as 13k at one time.
They are currently 11k to my knowledge.
