Beautiful!

I haven't dared try a new 4003 (my 4001 might get jealous), so I don't know for sure... but rumor has it that the current basses are some of the best Rickenbacker has ever made.

Question for the RIC experts...
I bought what was said to be an early 4003 in the very early 80's, perhaps 1980 or 81. I recall that bass was solid red, not sunburst like a typical Fireglow... I also recall that the bass had the two extra scews on the tail piece...
Did RIC release the Ruby Red in those years? Curious is all.
(no, I don't have that bass anymore)

There have been several "red" colors outside of the evergreen "Fireglo" red sunburst. Burgundy (also listed occasionally as "Burgundyglo") was an overall translucent wine red, sometimes very dark, almost black; those have been called "Eggplantglo" by some collectors. Burgundy was available from about 1963 until 1984. It was reissued as the 2002 "Color of the Year" only for instruments ordered that calendar year.
Ruby is a metallic red, first appearing as a "candy" style -- translucent red over metallic silver. This was later replaced buy a single-layer red metallic. Ruby was available from 1981 to '89, but has just been reintroduced in 2012 as a stock color. Ruby came standard with white trim and chrome hardware.
There is also "Red" which was a solid, non-metallic, fire-engine red, usually accompanied with black trim (binding, pickguard, and truss-rod cover) and black powder-coated hardware (tuners, pickup surrounds, tailpiece, and strap pins). The famous and rare "Redneck" basses were Red. Red was a stock color from 1985 to 1998.
There is also "Trans Red" available only on 4004 basses. This is an overall tail-light transparent red that shows off the wood grain below. This was available from about 2000 to present.
