NBD - Sandblasted Blue Jazz

I've had lots of new bass days in my life, but this 7th bass is the one most deserving of its own NBD thread. My wife bought me this (deep breath) Fender American Special Limited Edition Sandblasted Ash Jazz Bass in Sapphire Blue as a 5th wedding anniversary gift. Yes. Keeper. I know. I've been obsessing over these since the first pictures leaked out ahead of NAMM, and it's just fantastic in real life. I've had a bunch of basses, but this being "my first Fender," I'm pretty impressed with the construction and the feel; the setup and intonation were perfect right out of the box. Can't wait until my next gig on the 25th!!

Pic or it didn't happen, I know. I'll get some more as I get a chance, we're actually out on vacation visiting some friends, and we found the bass at a guitar shop 600 miles from home! I should give a shout out to Willcutt Guitars in Lexington, KY for being a great place to do business.

Love that grain! I ordered the Sandblasted Red P-bass from Long & McQuade here in Canada, but got a call a few days later that I was too late - none left. L&M only got 5 for all of Canada.

wow, that clear finish and body wood reminds me of my Master Built only sandblasted. amazing with that blue too! Gotta love the Ash body, too... Grats man! She's a keeper.

Some folks don't like pick guards. Personally, I think they're part of a bass's character. Still, nice work Fender for routing just the pickup holes and allowing full frontal if someone wants. Check this out:

Wow I gotta say that's one of the prettiest things I've ever seen come out of Fender. And I've been looking at Fender basses for 55 years. Seeing it without the pickguard makes me wonder if they can be ordered that way. I like it better without, it really shows off the wood. I think they'll really have a hit on their hands as more people see these. As good as it looks in pictures it must be a knockout in person.

I feel the need to throw in my two-cents-worth here; If it were mine, I'd drop some black screws into the pickguard holes and replace the chrome control plate with a black one. Quick and easy swaps that, I feel, would compliment that glorious finish-job, not to mention the black bridge.

But that's just one fellas opinion!

You know, I've got all those bits in my eBay shopping cart right now. Looking at a black string retainer and black Hipshot ultralite's too... I figure, the wife bought the bass, I can splurge on some little upgrades!

I think I'd make a pickguard that was only an "outline" of a pickguard, black, maybe 1/4" - 1/2" wide, with just a hole in the center - shows the pickguard shape, covers the screw holes, and shows that gorgeous top! Or that guy on ebay who makes metal "lacework" pickguards you can see the top through...

So yeah, I was on board with this plan from the get go, and the results are bitchin. It's hard to tell in the image, but the contrast of the black hardware makes the blue seem to glow even more than it did. I got meself a black leather strap to go with it, of course. It's cool! School-girl-giggle

Ugg so jealous I'm still tying to covince the girlfriend to let me buy the red one before someone else dose theres only one red p bass and Jazz at the long and mquade here I want to get my hands on one before it's gone ( she still can't understand why two basses that look the same sound different lol)still nice bass tho I'd Imagine the blue looked even better in person just like the red
