Very true. They are hand made, just cheaper labor in Horovice, CZ.

And the U.S. version has the HAZ preamp where the magic happens for the classic Spector sound, along with other nice upgrades like the beautiful abalone inlays.

What’s a good example of the “Spector” sound?

I find it to be punchy, clear, defined, and can get pretty grunty and growly when the pre is pushed and you dig in. The haz with the active emg's really do their own thing combined with a maple neck through.

It's showing itself to be very versatile. Can get pretty dubby. But I can't make it sound old skool.

Bought from the classifieds. All maple euro model with snc haz clone preamp. Getting it set to my liking. So far, it is giving me sounds I don't currently have on hand which was my goal. Very eager to play this out. Nothing sounds like a Spector.

What’s a good example of the “Spector” sound?

The first thing I think of:

Alice in Chains first 2 albums
Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime album

Of course, the fact is that Spector basses can be pretty versatile and they're not just used in Metal but other genres as well.

Sting used on for the 1983 Synchronicity tour, Flea used on at some point. Gary Talent from Bruce Springsteen's band plays a short scale Spector.

I'm more of a fusion and prog rock player, myself.

Never played a US, but I have two Euro neck thrus now and previously had a Euro bolt on. The quality is top notch. The satin finish Euro 4LX I have now is hands down the best bass I've played. Feels incredible.

My understanding is that the body woods are higher grade for us models, and they come with the original HAZ pre. This is from a spector employee.

I believe I read that the 3 piece maple neck blanks are made in the usa factory and shipped to Europe and are made into the euro models.

I have owned some great production instruments and this is among the best.

But, why is the cavity cover so far off the back of the bass? Are they actually too lazy to route a groove for it so it sits flush? Especially on such a beautiful bass?

Yes. Unfortunately, for some reason Spector doesn’t do a flush mount back plates. Some US owners say they have them on theirs but none of the 5 Spectors I’ve owned (from an 80s NS-2A to a Rebop to 3 Euros) have ever had one. They do, however do metal inserts for the backplate screws which is nice so you don’t strip out the wood when you take the backplate cover on and off.

I have a very nice custom shop ernie ball that also doesn't have a flush back plate. It seems odd, but it doesn't feel any different when playing. I think it's just something we've all become accustomed to seeing. Ymmv, obviously.
