NBD: Squier CV Jazz

I'm sure it's not news to many of you, but this bass is killer.

Right out of the box, the setup is fantastic, and all it needed was about a 1/2 a turn on the saddles to drop them down a bit.

Stock sound is great. Warm, balanced and surprisingly powerful pickups.

...But me being me, I had to yank the guts and install some new P/P pots that enable me to use my SD Vintage Jazz set in Series/Parallel and a kill switch to address one small gripe I have with Jazz basses' ability to "mute" the bass quickly and easily.

I also wetsanded the neck to remove that thick gloss just a but and give it a wonderfully smooth feel.

After i purchase my Stingray this bass is next on the list! Absolutely amazing for the money!

The major gripe everyone has is the neck, but i think that thats the reason for why the neck is so solid! The VM with the satin neck feel abit soft to me, feeling toyish and maybe more succeptable to warping?

When i do buy one of these i have a few ideas for the electronics. I will be replacing them regardless but unsure whether the slap some CTS 250s w/ ODcap orrrrr try designing myself a extensive passive system like yourself using a S/P switch ect.

How does series mode sound? Muddy at all?

The stock alnico pups sound great, but id be lying to say i wont be looking for an excuse to put the fender customshop 60s jazz pups in :) didnt they win bassmag's top rated replacement jazz pups? In this itd sound great :)

Just personal taste, but I find that the high gloss poly they use just sticks to my hands like glue.

Now, I didn't sand through it, just enough to knock down that sticky feeling and give my hands a little less restriction.

That is sweet. Congrats.

I love a super shiny neck and actually polish mine to a very high gloss. I guess I don't sweat or sumpthin'.

What I wonder about is that even if you do have the bass silenced, if you pull the plug, it'll still go pop - right?

I use the Standby in my amp with a stomp to shut off the whole sound train and can pretty much do anything I want then.

Was installing that set-up for the sole reason just to quiet the bass?

I can't speak for the Fender pups, but these Duncan Vintage Jazz's are quite nice in the bass as it is.

Is that what's in there? I LOVE those pu's. They have the ability to completely cover the low end without getting boomy or muddy.

Check out a few seconds of this. Go to about 1:20. The music gets really busy and the bass stays clear as a bell. A Squier CV J with D'Addario nickels.

I havent noticed a 'pop' with the kill switch. Although to be fair, I've only had it on my main rig once briefly (since its stored at our guitarists house)

The first p/p was to be able to run a series/parallel configuration for the pickups. While I was brainstorming at the work bench I decided to add the second switch to combat the muting issue.

I wish my 400+ had a FS activated mute!
