Are they?

I just found this from a 2008 post:

"Most Fender guitars come from the factory with cyclovac (simulated or composite bone). The exception are the vintage reissue and custom shop models which come with genuine bone."

I may well be wrong, but I think what Fender now calls "bone" is actually "tusq," which is a proprietary material akin to plastic that is claimed to possess less dead spots than real bone (which can be porous, which supposedly results in dead spots).

Fender wise guys always welcome to correct my homework.

One last time, folks. Look at the bottle size. Those are the pints and half pints, not the fifths. A fifth of Woodford Reserve runs about $38.

Oh, in that case, they're way overpriced. Still a nice bass, even though West Ham are a crap team. Like getting a new Precision and putting a Cleveland Browns sticker on it. Harris is from Leyton but I guess Leyton Orient are out of the question...

1) Doing business in downtown Austin, TX ain’t cheap.
2) The problem with Arsenal is that they always try to walk it in.
3) Gold, Sullivan and Brady have ruined our club.

This is a quote from Mike Eldred ,who ran the Fender Custom Shop until 2014.
So I take this as a definitive answer on the burning question of nut material:

"Fender used bone until the mid 60's. Then we went to the man made material. So a 1965 Strat would probably be plastic as well.

Custom Shop uses whatever you ask for."

So I’m not fond of flats and I’m assuming that the nut on this bass is cut to accommodate SH77’s (50-110 flats). Would I be okay putting a set of 45-105 on it or should I look for rounds that are 50-110?

I prefer 45-105's, and I think those rounds would sound awesome live, but that's me. If you like heavier strings, then 50-110's are what you should use.

Nah. I like 45-105’s. I usually play DR Black Beauties but may go for Sunbeams for this bass. Any other suggestions? I’m open to trying other strings.

My brother uses nylon strings on his early 70's Jazz bass and they sound great. However, he has a Silver Fender hum-bucker on it, which helps. Those DR Black Beauties have me intrigued (I prefer the feel of round-core strings). I wonder how they sound. Of course, it's all a matter of preference. I have the Dean Markley NPS strings on my Ric and love the way they feel and sound.

Those DR Black Beauties have me intrigued (I prefer the feel of round-core strings). I wonder how they sound. Of course, it's all a matter of preference. I thought the DRBB’s would sound slightly muted because of the coating when I first checked them out. But they really have some snap to the them. I was surprised. The feel good, too.

If you like the DRBB's then I would go for it! You need to get the most pleasure out of playing that bass. You can always experiment, but if you know what you like, that's where I would start. I'll bet it sounds just fine even with whatever stock Fender strings it came with.
