NBD - ugly duck

man this has made me miss mine so much.
Hey, my bass has an ugly sister! Was yours a short scale also? Try any different strings or have any advice for a new Dano owner?
For those of you with Dano Gas (aka - DAS) GC has a couple of used ones on their website.
I actually never changed strings before I sold it. Yes mine was short scale, i think all them were-at least all the Korean ones. These korean ones are miles ahead in quality then the newer ones.
I saw the used ones there, 1 korean one for $300. I just cant bring myself to pay $300 for one in worse shape then the one I sold for $300. I will find another someday.
As I recall the story, the Danelectroos came strung with light gauge roundwound strings, and the instrument had a very twangy, bright tone that John Entwistle wanted to showcase on "My Generation". But he broke a string before they could record a complete take, and because such strings were not available at the shop around the corner, he just got another Dano off the wall at the shop and ran back into the studio. String broke again. After running out of Dano basses at the shop, he ended up using a Jazz Bass strung with LaBella flats, and the rest is history.
Nothing bad or embarrassing about these basses.. they sound awesome, check out a band called Dos, (one of Mike Watt's bands, 2 basses, vocals and nothing else!) you'll hear the Danelectro in many of the songs. Difficult to track down these days but worth it, especially if you're a fan of Watt.
I'm not so sure I would call it ugly. I would definitely call it unique but, I like that.

I just picked this up used on a whim. Pulled it down from the hanger at GC just to see what one felt like and fell in love with the weight, balance and sound. The price was right so I bought it.
It's my first Danelectric Bass and I'll be the first to say you either love the look or hate it but once you get beyond that (if you need to) these little short scale things are pretty cool sounding. It has rounds right now, I'll probably replace those with flats. It's the first bass that I actually feel comfortable playing with a pic (I've always been a finger player) and it really gives off some cool retro surf vibes when picked. It's dead quiet when soloing eiter pickup (which I didn't expect) and has relatively good intonation for a goofy rosewood bridge. All around just a fun player and so increadibly light you'll forget you have it on.
If you haven't had a chance to try one of these give it a swing, for the price not a bad choice. I think this one is a Korean late 90's model but I'm not sure. If anyone has a clue on how to date or ID this bass speak up.

I think this looks ok.
Maybe that's what drew me to this bass, I love pugs, and bull dogs, and charpies, and those goofey goldfish with the big bug eyes - they're all so ugly they're cool.

Some people say they were the best of the re-issues . I have a black one and love it .
There is a sweet spot where the bridge will keep intonated but it might take a little frigging around to find it .

I dig me some dano. Fugly and cool all at once.
