I like a good, well-told story, and it doesn't hurt that there's a happy ending. Congrats!
I would wager there is quite a number of us that played another instrument in school and added bass or switched to it. I started out on trumpet in 6th grade and added bass in 9th. I took over the bass playing in Jazz band when I was a sophomore. Glad you got the one that started it all for you back. Great story!

It is how I found it at present. I have not swapped strings yet. If I remember my string tension correctly these feel a lot like regular EB Slinky strings....maybe even mediums. But, yeah, my restring will be neater than this.
Edit to add: MY first amp was a TKO as well. The TNT belonged to the school. I loaned mine to a guy who sold it for drugs a few months into playing. My uncle was the Lt. Sheriff of our county. You can believe he replaced my amp.
Wow! That's rough! Have to be desperate to sell a crappy bass amp for drugs. And how much would he have gotten for the amp? Hundred bucks or so?
That might buy some schwag weed but anything harder wouldn't last long at all.
Welp, a buddy was heading to the town where my luthier lives this morning so the bass is on its way to get revived. Fingers crossed! I'll report back when it gets home....again.

Cool story! I also played bass with a high-school jazz band, but I supplied the jazz bass. 
Awesome story i love stuff like this. (and that's still the best red Fender ever used on a bass). It reminds me of a guy I know who had a mid 70s Camaro and sold it in the early 80s only to find it at a lot in 2005, where he promptly bought it again.
Makes me think back to all the gear I wish i still had. Had a Les Paul double cutaway i sold and still kick myself over it.

Our high school jazz band supplied some plastic (I really think it was) bass that had either "Black Magic" or "Black Widow" on the headstock. It actually didn't play too badly, but it was definitely not a very nice bass. I've never found any more info on it.
In my high school Jazz band they supplied the backline, a Peavey Mark IV and a 215 cabinet (No Black Widows). I supplied my own bass guitar which at that time was an Ibanez Mapleglo Ric copy with a bolt on neck. I played that bass for a long time as my only bass and later as a backup. I really did not like it very much. No amount of tightening of the neck screws would stop the neck from shifting and it sounded almost, but not quite, completely unlike a real Ric. To top that off, the neck pup was so microphonic as to make it completely unusable.

I was in high school in the mid to late 90s. I assume this bass was from the last 80s/early 90s. The best I can recall is that it was a J bass knockoff that was jet black. We even tried scraping the paint in some places and it just stayed black. Insert "it didn't go back" joke here.

I played bassoon back then. I've always liked low instruments. My dad plays bass at work sometimes, but he's a tuba player first and foremost. I picked up his old 1990 samick 5 string, and the rest is history. I joined jazz band, got invited to gigs because I'm the only bassist in a thousand miles.

Only way this story could be better is that bass still had the flats OP put on when he first got it.
