Well, my buddy says everything is fine. It just needed a good cleaning and whatnot.
Great story! I thought it was going to be about you returning to a type of bass you used to play, not the actual first bass you ever played.
Thanks. Check out the bottom.of page 7. I just swung by to update. An old friend of mine has it and is giving it a good once over. He has totally disassembled it and is giving get every part some TLC.
I checked out the pics on page 6 too. I hope you're just gonna have it cleaned up and not refinished. All those scratches and dings are like battle scars. I'd keep 'em. (though I might humbly suggest a gold aluminum PG. Looks gorgeous on a CAR P-bass... or so I'm told.

Wow! Your story is very similar to mine, red P bass included except I haven't found mine yet. I started out in the school band playing trumpet in the 5th grade, instructor wanted me to play a baritone horn for the bass in the school band the next year. I played it and actually loved it, (anything bass was great with me) I took right to it (same fingering as a trumpet) and played it for that whole year, graduated to 7th grade, different school and band, they already had a tuba player so back to trumpet and eventually I quit the band and played guitar, first love was always bass though. Bought several basses including a sunburst P bass in 1971, a no name before that, got rid of it got a Candy Apple Red late 60's Fender P bass on a trade for a humbucker tele bass (sat in in a bar liked it and made the trade a few days later). It was my main bass for 18-19 years, got sick and sold it to a music store in New Hampshire, haven't seen it or heard of it in 22 years, it was pretty beat though had a lot of play wear (I think it was a nitro finish) so it's probably been refinished since then, it had a 66 Jazz neck on it when I got rid of it so if it's still original I will know it on sight but doubt it is. I still hold out hope though that I'll at least find it somewhere, we played a lot of shows together. Mine looked almost identical to yours though, white pickguard but J neck

Yeah I'm keeping it all original. He's just going through everything well and while he was at it decided to check out the neck pocket. Actually he probably removed the neck for a good fret job now that I think about it.
That's a damn cool story, you could have been searching forever for that. Could have ended up in another state, or another country even.

I'm not holding my breath, but thanks, when I had that bass, (70's) red fenders were pretty rare.
I don't know how I missed this great thread. All I can say is congrats on bringing your first love back home.
Well, he's got it back together all cleaned up and set up. He lives 70 miles away so I'll get with him ASAP and bring it home for good.

Yeah he's good at what he does. He took good care of me too. We go way back. It'll probably be next week when I get it back but hopefully my busted hand will be ready to play by them. I was playing with my daughters and my nephews the other day and banged it up real good. The one that is smooth on top is swollen a lot. Got an X-ray today and should get a call from the Doc in the morning letting me know if I broke it or not.
Two, your friend did such a good job on the P, maybe he should also look at your hand? The bass looks great, and needless to say, it's back in good hands...
