Ha! My nephews try that junk too. What is it about that with little boys??? I have little ninja moves (not literally) that I use to "gently set them on the ground" when they go for the beans and franks.

Yeah my guy is great. He is one of those people who can cut down a tree and make a guitar or bass out of it. But he seems to prefer keeping existing ones running smoothly and bringing older ones back to life.

Can't wait to play it! (Hopefully with both hands.)

That's a great story, glad you got it back. My Hofner that My folks bought me in '72 was out of my possession for ten years ('76-'86) and I was able to buy it after tracking it through two owners. I know how happy you must be! Those 80s Japanese Precisions are great basses!

Update!

I finally got the bass back from my luthier buddy who lives an hour or so away. Now, my hand is busted (covered that in an Off Topic thread). So I could only play a few notes. But it plays great. It's cleaned up a lot (board, bridge and tuners, electronics, new nut and all). I'll post some pics later. He literally took it all apart and put it back together cleaning and tweaking as he went.

Gotta wait a few weeks to really put it through its paces (again, busted hand), but it's back home (for good) and all cleaned up and set up.

This is the first I heard of you hand, Hammer. Please, hammer, don't hurt 'em! Okay, enough old man references

I just read the original busted hand post.... what was yhe ultimate diagnosis? what's the current prognosis?

In medical terms, I pissed off hand my hand. :D

X-rays showed no breaks. Orthopedics doc said the muscle tissue, ligaments and tendons were all "severely contused" which is fancy pants for banged up and badly bruised.

I can grip with my thumb and index fingers very well. Middle finger depends on the day. Pinky and ring finger have full motion, but any gripping with them at all creates the sensation of my hand being stabbed front and back with several ice picks.

So he told me not to play bass at all and generally "take it easy" on the hand. If it doesn't get markedly better in a couple weeks he will put me on a short course of oral steroids (prednisone) to "help it along".

I play bass right handed. But everything else is left handed and this is my left hand. So functioning is pretty annoying.

I'm trying to stay philosophical about it....get my @slobake or my @Joe Nerve on....and go with "coulda been worse". :thumbsup:

Good thing you guys don't know the "real" me....

Should have seen me yesterday when I had to wait 4 hours for the cops to come and tell me there was nothing they could do about the stolen parked car that rammed into the back of my car while I was at work.

Oh yeah, "It coulda been worse." For me, and you.

Sorry your hand if effed up. Our bodies do an amazing healing job though. I've a feeling yer gonna be just fine.

Missed this story the first time around, but great to see that it's back from the luthiers and in good shape. I've still got my first, a black MIM P. She's also got alot of bumps and bruises (and almost no original parts other than the neck, plate, body and nut) but she's a keeper.

How the heck did two fingers become a bass player anyway? Welp, I played low brass in high school. One day the band director called me into his office and told me he wanted me to play TUBA in the JAZZ BAND! My reply was something like "No offense, but that ain't cool. No thanks, man." Two weeks later he called me into his office and pointed in the corner. Still in the box was a new P bass and a Peavey TNT amp. "Jazz band starts in a few weeks. Better get ready." the rest is history. Yes, I played in jazz band. But, a few weeks after this fateful event, a guy who grew up with my mom came over and begged her to let me go out and fill in with his classic rock cover band for the weekend....one weekend.....which led to two weekends....which led to my 15 year old skinny butt playing shows all over NC and VA for the rest of high school. Here's a pic from Spring of '86.

A few years and a lot more hair later I was still playing in that band and moved away from home about 70 miles away. Wound up playing in 5 bands at once barely making a living. Then I moved on to teaching lessons and working in a full line music store. After that, playing for a living in a private/corporate party band. Point is, that red bass changed my life. I even met my wife at a show.

Years ago I had started trying to find that bass. I contacted the various band directors that came and went. They all had looked for the bass. It was simply...."missing".

Fast forward to last week. My brother, a self-proclaimed pawn shop whore, waltzed into a tiny pawn shop in our tiny hometown he had never been in. And there it was.

He immediately knew what it was. (Not only is he a guitar player, but he played trumpet with me in that same jazz band 30+ years ago.) He sent me that pic and my face got hot. I immediately had him check a few things to make sure it was that exact bass. It is.

They were asking a ridiculously high price. I wanted the bass but wasn't about to pay too much for it. I started a price check thread about it. It's around here somewhere.

"Get to the point twofer!!!!" OK, OK, chill.

84-87 MIJ by the serial number.

I got the bass. It has been through some things, and has some scars. But, don't we all....

So, back then I was clueless. I'm not really sure about a model number or anything. But here it is, bumps and all. Welcome home old friend. You tell me your stories and I'll tell you mine. It's been a long time. Since you pointed me in a new direction, I've seen a lot. Seems you have too. We have some catching up to do.

I missed this post - it is hard to keep up with every post on TB if you have a full time job :D - but cool story and also cool you got your bass back.

BTW: figured from the wisdom of several of other posts by you I would have estimated you 2 decades older but I guess you're around my age.
Seems I still have a lot to learn ;)

I'm not sure if that means a "seems wise" or if it seems as though I'm getn old. :D

Thanks. Not sure if you read get far but O have it back and it sounds and plays just like a P bass should. Nice chunky neck on it too. It's in the rotation for sure.
