ok technically i have had both of them for awhile, but i overhauled them and they just got finished about the same time.

-sx precision deluxe- sx jazz neck, SD QP p pickup, SD MM pickup, stacked volume, 250k cts pots, drop orange cap, gotoh 201, ashtray, i want to add a hipshot drop d tuner.

-sx jazz- squier vm p neck, reverted back to stock electronics, fender american knobs, fender bridge, smiley face sticker (my 11 y/o cousin wanted to sticker one of my basses. it used to have a toggle swtich, so she covered the hole), adding a tort pg, still removing squier logo, going to leave it blank.

Special thanks to TBers MikeyB, Shelly, and A-Step-Towards for providing my necessary parts. Also a thanks to luthier Ron Luczak for routing my MM pickup.

Nice mods you've got going on there.

I have the EXACT same pickups on my Clement custom. Only difference is that mine run through an active Bart pre.

Have you A/B'ed your P-bass with an actual Ray? I'd love to know how different the MM pickup sounds when its run passive.

Just saw this! The P looks cool!! I posted my VM J in the tricked out thread, and I will be putting it under the knife (router) soon to do exactly the same thing you did to the P. I plan on having two new push pull pots installed; one to control hum/single on the MM PU, and the other to control parallel/series switching. Is there any way to choose which coil in the SD MM pu is active when single coil is chosen? Sorry, electronics mystify me, and I want to be sure I keep the bark I have now. Again, both basses look great!
Peace in the mitten,
Brian

Nice, that P/MM should sound amazing! although im kinda curious, why did you change the necks? just for looks?

it started that way, but when i got it i liked it a lot more than the original. the pbass sx neck was super chunky, and very uncomfortable. this one is pretty close to a geddy lee style in both looks and feel.

im sure there is a way to isolate that signal in a switch or control somehow. but i couldnt tell you. there are a few good wiring gurus here on tb. line6man being one of the best IMO.

i plan on shielding it still, i didnt have enough copper tape to do it this time around. i want to add hipshot tuners and a drop d tuner to the pbass.

the jazz....im leaving alone for now. i like the sound of the stock electronics, and that new neck feels great on it. i was going to sell that bass in parts, but when i found that neck i couldnt pass it up.

been playing both side by side, and i actually like the sound and playability of the jazz a bit more. this sx may end up in the classifieds....but i guess only time will tell. i need to get some gigging done with it to make a fair judgement.

Although it's a bit of a clippy rush-job, you can hear the SD SMB-4A pickup soloed in this demo I knocked up for an auction a few months ago.

It's the first parts bass that I built four years ago (Mighty Mite body & neck). The bass was strung with 2-year old TI flats, but should give you an idea of how the pickup sounds in that position.

I put the proceeds towards a MIM Fender Classic Series 50s P-bass.

the placement of the humbucker is a collab effort from me and my guitar tech.
there wasnt much room to play with anyway, and we came to the consensus that
closer to bridge would be better for tone.

i need to do some videos or something with it....maybe this weekend.

Do you find you have a difference in output between the pickups?
I notice that the Quarter Pounder P has more output than the MM in my Clement. To have the pickups equally balanced, I have to pan the blend control slightly toward the MM.

yeah i have noticed that too. im tempting to run each pickup to its own tone control instead of a master tone. see itf that changes anything. i noticed it more with my tone pulled back than anything else. the p pup sounds thin compared to the MM, but they compliment each other nicely. thats kinda why i want more tone control.

they work well together. i was used to having a nice full sound with the QPs alone in another bass, but in this one they have more high end and punch than im used to. but with the mm pup it helps balance it out. like i said they compliment each other very nicely.

after messing with it some more im hoping to get some sound clips posted soon. ill keep TB up to date.
