NCAA Football - 2011

I really need him to elaborate on this point. Did he report it, then someone in the AD sweep it under the rug?

-Mike

Nope... just didn't report it.

Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel received an e-mail last April telling him that two of his players were caught up in a federal drug-trafficking case and the sale of memorabilia, breaking NCAA rules.

Tressel responded: "I will get on it ASAP."

But he never mentioned it to Ohio State's compliance department or his athletic director for more than nine months.

On April 2, 2010, Tressel received an e-mail from a person he identified only as "a lawyer," who wrote that Ohio State players had been implicated in activities with Eddie Rife, a local tattoo-parlor owner, whom the federal government was investigating on charges of drug-trafficking. The e-mail, released to reporters but with the names redacted, said players were selling signed Buckeyes memorabilia and giving it to Rife in exchange for money and tattoos.

Tressel said he allowed the two players cited in the e-mail to play the entire 2010 season because he did not want to "interfere with a federal investigation" and worried that sitting eligible players would raise a "whole new set of questions."

The Buckeyes coach said he was trying to protect his players by not breaking the confidentiality of the federal investigation.

Any coach in the Country would have done what Chizik did. The only higher charge than what these guys are facing is murder or rape. They have been charged with 5 counts of a class A felony. They might not even get to watch a game of football on TV for years. Their bond is set at $511,000.

I dunno, he let Cam play all year.

I know you're joking, but there is some truth in that jest. I think many coaches would have sat Cam for fear of future problems. Chizik rolled the dice a bit on that one, and so far it seems that he came out a winner.

Sat him after they got up by 30 in another game. :hmm:

I will miss Urban Meyer as an X and O guy, but I am really hoping Muschamp cleans up the program, and keeps the Gators players making headlines for performances ON the field.

Wait a second, is MJ acknowledging that UF wasn't squeaky clean under Urban Meyer, whilst also having hope in a Former Longhorn?

This is a breakthrough!
:D

Edit...yes I realize Cam is not guilty of any criminal activity like these guys have been charged with.

-Mike

Yeah, it was only theft and cheating, and the prostitution thing. No big deal.

It speaks volumes about Chizik that he released them immediately instead of waiting or having someone sweep it under a rug for 9 months.

I can't deny the 7,000 arrests while Meyer was coach.

I don't blame Meyer for what his players did off the field, especially in the off season, but it was on his watch so the buck stops with him. Across the board, I think it's unfair when a coach is held accountable for player actions that have nothing to do with on the field performance, but I have no way of changing that, so I'll have to accept it.

Muschamp seems like a good enough guy, it's just too bad he got stuck in the armpit school Texas. :D
