NCAA Football - 2011

Wow, Cam Newton is really shooting himself in the foot. He's on record now as saying he not only sees himself as an athlete, but as an entertainer and icon. That's not going to help him get drafted higher at all.

Probably not, but he'll score enough money up front in endorsements to live the high life until he spends it all.

I feel bad for the team that gets suckered into drafting him.

I'll be curious to see if Cam is this year's version of Jamarcus Russell or if he can actually play at the next level.

While I'm no Cam Newton fan, I think he'll do better than Russell (admittedly a low bar to clear) but I don't think he's a franchise QB along the lines of Brady or Manning either.

If I were drafting a QB though, I'd be concerned about his somewhat checkered past. I'd probably take a pass on him.

Agreed on Newton. While I was confident he'd do well at Auburn(wasn't expecting him to completely dominate like he did though), I'm not so sure he has it for the NFL.

As for Richt, I hope he can pull it together there. There aren't enough quality guys like him coaching football IMHO, and I'd hate to see him get ousted.

So hey Bartman...is Richt going to make it through the season?

-Mike

I'm hoping he does. I like the guy personally and appreciate that he's generally a class act and does right by the players.

He's made some boneheaded decisions at times, but I liked what he did with regards to the AJ Green situation last year. Compare that to Tressel's response to when the same situation happened at OSU last year.

I'd rather lose with integrity than win by flouting the rules any day.

Anyone catch Urban Meyer throwing the NCAA under the bus? I know he is being criticized for keeping his mouth shut when he was coaching, but I kinda sorta think he had to so he didn't get in trouble with the NCAA.

-Mike

Yeah, I read that. I'm not sure what to think at this point. While at Florida, he job was to be the coach and get good recruits. Now his job is to be a talking head and make people want to listen to what he has to say (although I think he's probably sincere in this case at least). I tend to agree with some of his general comments on things though. There's really nothing he could have said while at Florida if he really had issues with the NCAA. Florida didn't hire him to fight the NCAA.

Maybe Mark Cuban will save us all. :D

Sorry for gushing about Bammer stuff, but Julio Jones is dominating the receiver corps at the combine, even over AJ Green. A lot of people expected this to happen, even though Green had better numbers in college. The surprise is that Jones is also faster than Green and many of the other receivers who are working through the trials. Just shy of 6'3", and a legitimate 220 pounds, he's running 40's just over 4.3 seconds.

The Texans could be after a receiver in the 1st round, I'd much prefer Jones to AJ for a couple reasons. Plus I'm sure he'd like being reunited with fellow NCAA champion Kareem Jackson.
I think Green could be the man with the right QB. He reminds me of Jerry Rice. Both had great hands, ran perfect routes, and just new how to get open. But Jones is the one that opens up the entire offense more. He's ready right now to take on any back in the NFL, and he's nasty with downfield blocking. His one weakness is that he tends to get ahead of himself, and occasionally drops a pass he should have caught. That's something that can be fixed. With the accuracy of passing in the NFL, Jones should be almost impossible to stop.
