NCAA Football - 2011

I know a couple guys at the combine. They had good things to say about Marcus Gilbert and Carl Johnson. Both guys are Gators for anyone who didn't know. :D

-Mike
You know, guys like this who don't have big name recognition often go on to be some of the best players in the NFL. They're probably more motivated to do well also because they aren't on the front page of ESPN every other day.

As an NFL GM, I would draft Jones over Green based simply on the fact that Jones is a winner. In my opinion, coming from a winning culture will separate guys from each other who may be similar physically.

Jones seems like a better guy to me and that's why I want him over Green. But the only place I've ever seen Julio do better than Green is at the combine, in pads Green looks head and shoulders above the rest.

I would agree to some extent, especially looking at the totality of their college careers. Jones had some unfortunate injuries that had long healing times associated with them, so it does skew things. Hopefully that doesn't mean he's injury-prone, but many will wonder. When it comes to being healthy, I think Jones looked better in those games. One of the biggest thing that NFL guys will look at is Jones' matchup againt LSU's Peterson, who is another NFL-ready caliber player. Jones pretty much owned Peterson on each occasion, and pushed him around seemingly at will. That's no small task, and it's a great indicator of what he'll do in the NFL. Green doesn't have anywhere near that kind of power, and will rely more on his hands and cat-like agility to make plays. Either way, both guys should have great careers. I just wonder how well Green will do week-in and week-out when every back in the league is like Peterson, and they're jamming him outside.

Jones threw Peterson around? Peterson is absolutely amazing so if Jones was "pushing him around at will" that in my minds puts him above Green.

Jones had some of his best games against Peterson, and threw him off like a rag doll on a few plays to score touchdowns. LSU was pretty much the only team that took multiple shots at playing a back (Peterson) one-on-one with Jones so they could stop our running game, and it didn't go so well. Do some Youtube searches for clips.

So how are the trees doing down in Auburn? Are the going to be able to save them?
Still in a wait and see mode, which I don't get because all the experts agree that the trees will die. The longer they wait to excavate that area, then the more chance there is that the chemicals will spread around and get deeper into the soil. I think they should dig the whole area up now, and bring in new dirt and replant something else. There has been talk of cutting the trees up and making some kind of memorabilia out of them that fans could purchase. That could be kind of cool perhaps if it was done right.

So it's being said that Tressel new of the players selling stuff 8 months before the school did, and he didn't report it. It seems his integrity bit is going down the tubes pretty quickly.

*Knock, knock*
Hello, Oregon? You there? The NCAA is here to see you....

Sources: Oregon, recruiting service probed.

-Mike

I hate the way the NCAA handles things like this. It says the NCAA agreed that the recruiting office was compliant in 2010, but they want to probe anyways.

So it's being said that Tressel new of the players selling stuff 8 months before the school did, and he didn't report it. It seems his integrity bit is going down the tubes pretty quickly.

It was an "unnamed" source. I reserve the right to call BS on anyone that refuses to go further than anon.

I'm an unnamed source for the Trojans, Lane Kiffin is breaking the rules...

I don't like the school, but I do have a measure of respect for Tressel and his sweater vests.

-Mike

I have a great deal of respect for him, but I'm no OSU fan either.

+1. Always thought that was overplayed a little, anyway.

Not me...

Not after his repeated "Teflon Don" type escapes from NCAA sanctions...

Maurice Clarett, repeated allegation about recruiting violations while he was at Youngstown St....

Oh, and the tweet by Antonio Pittman

"This osu tattoo stuff is silly. Cats been gettin hookups on tatts since back in 01"

When you make the kind of money the NCAA does, they aren't worried about how stupid they look. Just think for a moment how many times we read of ultra-wealthy people doing completely stupid things. They don't care.

-Mike

Tressel's being suspended by OSU for two games. No word from the NCAA yet.

"Ohio State has suspended football coach Jim Tressel two games and fined him $250,000 for violating NCAA rules, following a Monday report indicating he was aware of potential NCAA violations involving star quarterback Terrelle Pryor and others months before the school was told."

"I am sorry and disappointed this happened. At the time the situation occurred, I thought I was doing the right thing,"Tressel said.

What?:eyebrow:

While this alone doesn't automatically make Tressel a bad guy, I've never really rhought he was a good guy either. He's old-fashioned, and a lot of people have mistaken that for other things I think.

Yep, it was a fairly serious violation, because coaches are required by the NCAA and the schools to report violations. I'm not saying it should be the death penalty or anything, but I guarantee you it would be far worse if it was an insignificant program by NCAA standards.

I suspect the NCAA has egg on it's face from this one for years. To not suspend those Buckeye players for the bowl game, but to have them serve suspensions next season if they don't go into the draft is a bit disingenuous.

It's a lot like the Pete Carroll case. The NCAA has all kinds of agreements with the NFL regarding draft eligibility, but none regarding coaches who cheat, and get caught. To me, the NFL is only promoting cheating when it hires someone like that.
