I bought a strap that locks over top of the default strap buttons. No need for locks for me. I can use the strap on any bass, basically.

Neccesity of strap locks?

I had one slip off the strap once. I caught it so nothing happened, but that was enough for me.

I have Schaller locks on my jazz, cause they came in the case. On my old Ibanez P bass I unscrewed the strap peg, held the strap in place, but a washer over it and then screwed the strap peg back in. On the downside, this means the strap can't come off without a screwdriver. On the upside, this means the strap can't come off without a screwdriver.
I tend to use them more on the top button, as the strap tends to pull them away from the body a little. The bottom strap button usually isn't an issue for me as the strap tends to wrap around the body.
If the strap is really stiff, I need them less. If the strap is fairly flexible and might pull off the button I use them for safety.
I don't jump around or yank the bass around, so I don't need them as much as others might.
Just think about it and evaluate your own equipment and playing style. Decide accordingly.

I have your average, run-of-the-mill strap locks from Schaller on my Spector... and honestly, they're not very sturdy. Plus, I have several straps and none of them fit on the pin WITH the lock...
I think I might get some new ones for the Spector, but I could really use some heavy duty ones for my Atkinson.
I've had two different kinds of locking straps from Planet Waves. One broke and made a bass land in grass (twice). The other one was much better, but an ex-band member laid claim to it when a ****** situation occurred.

Straplocks are completely unnecessary until your bass drops neck first onto the drummer's ride cymbal, stage, floor etc.

I agree. I wouldn't gig any of my basses without my trusty dunlop straploks.
I have Dunlop Dual Design straplocks on most of my basses. I've never dropped a bass and hopefully never will.
It would be nice to know how many of you strap lock users move much during gigs?
I don't use them, however I don't move around much at all. I'm more worried about my cheap $5 strap coming apart rather then it slipping off the button.

I can't stand 'em. I don't really care for the Dunlop design and I've always had problems with the Schallers. I have one of two solutions that are both cheap and effective.
1. My main bass (Aria SB-1000CB) has huge oversized strap buttons and combined with a Mono Betty Strap (memory foam padded neoprene) that has super tight/stiff button holes, it holds up to anything. I actually have a hard time getting the strap off.
2. If you have a strap that stays on a particular bass, just a rubber washer on each strap pin over the strap. Super cheap and very effective.

I have a strap for each bass I own. And I use those little rubber grolsh washers as strap locks... .50 cents a piece. And never had a failure yet after 4 years of using them!
I feel that SOME sort of strap locks are a necessity. But it doesn't have to be the name brands. Like spaz said, the Grolsch washers are fine.
I prefer the cheapo neoprene washers from the hardware store (about .40 cents each). They stretch for easy on/off if you want to do that. I have a strap for each bass, so I just use a set on each one and rarely remove the strap. But they return to their normal shape immediately if you do need to take them off then put them back on.

That is what Gene Simmons does on his basses. Seems very effective but not sure I would want to screw those into my bass.

They sound like a knock off of the Schallers. I have those on all of my Ibanez basses and they have worked great. 2 of my Soundgears are almost 20 years old with the Schallers and I have never had an issue yet with them.
On my Music Man basses, I use the Ernie Ball Superlocks and they too have worked great. Not a single problem with them either.
