I just finished my early half hour practice and in a few minutes I'm going to walk my pre-dawn speed mile, then breakfast, another half hour practice and then off to P/T as part of my recovery from a minor stroke I had back in July.

As far as neck dive is concerned, it's a question of balance. Many years ago I decided I would no longer tolerate playing unbalanced instruments. If a bass isn't balanced such that the neck stays where I put it while standing, I won't play it.

Shortly after that ^^^, I decided I would no longer tolerate playing heavy instruments. The definition of "heavy" is at my discretion. If a bass feels heavy to me, it is. That can make the balancing the instrument a bit more of a challenge but with a combination of light replacement tuners and altering the strap button locations it works out fine. Plus using short scales reduces the cantilever effect of a longer neck.

I like neck dive. It builds arm strength. Also, constantly having to adjust my bass keeps me from focusing on trivial things like fretting the correct note without having to look at my neck because the bass shifted significantly.

I generally agree, especially since there are so many great basses that are well balanced. The exception might be for a bass that will be played sitting down almost all the time.

Depends on how big of a deal it is to you and how easily you can just put up with it I guess. If you cannot it's a big deal and thus usually is somehow tried to be combatant against.

to me, neck dive is a pretty big issue. neck dive slows down my playing as i have to use my left hand to hold up the neck, and it also causes me to have hand cramping and pain if my wrist if i do have to hold up the neck for more than 15 or 20 minutes.

I have a G&L L2000. Is it well balanced? I think so, but I don't know. I don't have another bass to compare it to.
It may sound ridiculous, but I have found that whatever shirt I have on at the time affects neck dive a lot.
Most dress shirts cause neck dive, but cotton tee shirts seem to stop it entirely or at least slow it way down.

Let’s be clear about neck dive. Shirts cannot cause neck dive. Neck dive is caused by imbalanced basses. Some shirts might be more grippy than others, but the dive is a result of the balance of the bass and where the strap buttons are placed.

give me a break, junior: how much of your overall technique is limited by the fact that you have to hold up the neck when you could be playing the fingerboard?

Exercise and practice have no effect on neck dive whatsoever. It’s great if you’re looking to decrease your technical ability and potentially get some repetitive stress pain though.

All things being equal, it is simply more fun and more comfortable playing a balanced bass than an unbalanced one.

I agree, life is too short to play an unbalanced bass. It's not about being in good shape. It's about technique. It's probably not that hard to hold the up the bass neck on a thunderbird or something, but if I gotta wrap my thumb around the whole neck to fulcrum it into the proper playing position, somethings suffering...So, so, many well balanced instruments out there at all price points. Are we really having this conversation? - I'm at work, not motivated to start my next project on a rainy Friday, so practice is not suffering. Digging me some Dave Mason and typing up something for Talkbass. Don't get much better than that...
